79 Single Cab Dually - How low can ya go?!

Hey guys, Possibly might be picking up a dually tomorrow night and I was curious on how much of a static drop I could do on that before running into problems. Figure the suspension is different so I might not beable to go that low..? Can someone clear this up? Thanks

Just do spindles, bags up front, 4 link and bags in the rear. Call it good...

X2

Why are you thinking of keeping it a static drop? Nothing wrong with that, I am just curious.

Cost. Trying to keep it relatively cheap. I cant fabricate to save my life so I wouldnt want to try and do an airbag set up without having the fear of messing it up.

Re: 79 Single Cab Dually - How low can ya go?!

Will the rear bumper on my 86 bolt up to this truck? Not sure if there is a difference in the mounting vrs the 2 years. It has a big aluminum bumper on it now thats bent downward and my 86 is just sitting, was thinking I could snag the bumper off of it and throw it on the dually.

Re: 79 Single Cab Dually - How low can ya go?!

yes, the bumper will bolt up.
mine has 3" spindle's, 2" shackle's ($30 at AutoZone) and 4 leaf's remove'd. still room to go lower. I'm gonna 4 link it like N2TRUX suggest'd. I spent bout 2500 on the bag stuff.

Re: 79 Single Cab Dually - How low can ya go?!

What wheels are you running? Did you get some Townastys or a C&C Rear?? Looks like I have to either fork out the money for townastys, find a C&C rear, or have the stock rear narrowed to go very low so the 22s will clear the rear fenders?

So I just learned the truck is a Man. How hard is it to swap it over to an automatic? Im gonna be honest, I dont know how to drive a stick. Would it be a pain in the ass to swap it over?

Re: 79 Single Cab Dually - How low can ya go?!

there TowNasty's. they clear the fender with a steel inner, but I think I'll wide'n the fender so I can add an aluminum inner wheel. If I had to do it again I'd just wide'n the fender's.

I think all you need is a flywheel, Torque converter, Transmission, Transmission cooler & lines. You will also have to hook up vacuum for the transmission as well as the kick down (unless you go with a th400 you need an electronic kick down). For shifting you can either use a floor shifter, or you would have to find an automatic steering column and all of the linkage to hook the shifter up. Might also have to shorten or lengthen your drive shaft depending on which transmission you use.

Re: 79 Single Cab Dually - How low can ya go?!

I bought one of my son's a manual K10 recently, he learn'd to drive it in a day.
the swap aint too bad, a doner truck would be nice so ya can get all the little crap , colum, linkage, line's, radiator with a tran's cooler.
if you go with a TH350 you need one with a long tail shaft.

Re: 79 Single Cab Dually - How low can ya go?!

So after some thought, Im going to pass on the dually. I found a 79 shortbed thats about 5 miles from my house im going to go look at. Rebuilt motor and tranny with all the paper work. Body is a little ruff and an eye sore right now, but if I end up getting the thing ill turn it around this weekend.

Re: 79 Single Cab Dually - How low can ya go?!

Was told the truck was nice, No rust through anywhere, was told the interior was in very good shape, no rips or tears. Told the rear bumper was "slightly" tweaked but not that bad. I get there and it was a POS, and thats an under statement. Rust through everywhere, interior was destroyed, pine needles and mold. Moss growing on the outside, bumper was caved in to the point the tailgate wouldnt open up... Lol, i told her it wasnt worth 500$ and she freaked out on me. Offered her $600 and she said there was 3 people ready to buy it for $900. I laughed at her and told her good luck.
