A/C is loud?

When the A/C compressor starts to be loud, to loud for my liking, does this mean its about to go out? It has been recharged and looked over by an A/C shop and they just said it is old? Well, I know its old, it one of the original ones? What is the best one out there to replace it with, no matter the price and I guess I would throw a polished one in or a chrome one, but prefer a polished or billet? Thanks!

Re: A/C is loud?

You probably are just a little low on oil.
Back when R12 was sold over the counter to you and me a guy could purchase an "oil charge" which was a small can of oil and R12. One of them usually fixed the problem.
If an A/C shop is telling you it is just old you need a new A/C shop.

Re: A/C is loud?

I agree on the new A/C shop, I thought it was odd that they just flat out told me it was old and no other solution? Anyway, I will take a look at the oil? Not sure how to do that, but I will figure it out. Thanks!!!

Re: A/C is loud?

You can still buy the oil charge in both R12 & 134A. There is no way to check the oil but you can add an oil charge can to the system the same way the refrigerant is put in. It may help. When freon leaks out a small amount of oil goes with it. If the service tech. does not add oil it leaves the system low. If the clutch bearing is nioisey it can be replaced without removeing or dischargeing the system. Check all the mounting brackets & bolts. Sometimes the vibration with a loose bracket can cause a noise like a bad comp.
