doors won't stay open

The doors on my '71 won't stay open. Are there supposed to be detents or a spring in the hinge that keep the door from swinging shut?

Anybody? Cars seem to have a half-open stop and a full-open stop to hold the doors. Trucks don't do this?

I've wondered about this too, my 70 C10 is the same way - maybe they only had a spring on the CST - or maybe NONE of them had it ????
Somebody will tell us !!!

Re: doors won't stay open

Have a look at the hinges. There's I think two pieces of flat steel that slide into some black plastic as the door closes. The plastic wears and there's less friction to keep the door where you left it. Or so I read in an article somewhere.

The same article said you can get the plastic parts but I've never seen them. I also haven't had any luck driving the pins out that keep the flat pieces in.

Re: doors won't stay open

I had this happen to me and one day the wind blew the door into my wife bruising here leg between the door and the cab, so I replaced the hinges with fresh ones, but when you do this expect stiff doors for a while.

Re: doors won't stay open

I had that prob as well so bought the new upper hinges, and I'd have to say that i'm not that happy with the results, my door seems not to open as far with the new hinge and it holds open only moderately better that the old set.
It's like the small jaws with the plastic friction pads inside don't get any where near far enough past the raised part.
1st pic shows an old hinge with a new hinge below it.

Re: doors won't stay open

you can buy replacement rubber pads for the detent from classic parts of america...they are pricey though. the replacement procedure is in faq under door hinge rebuild.
