How do yo remove a glovebox without destroying it?

Anyone know a trick on how to remove a cardboard glove box on a 72 chevy c20 with AC without destroying it, mine is either new or just very well maintained and I simply need to find a wire that may have burned up behind it.

Good luck. If they are a little worn you can usually finesse it out but if they are new or stiff good luck. The repops are fairly nice and inexpensive. Order a new one and do your best. If you ruin it you will have the replacement on the shelf.

I dammaged mine a bit removing it, some duct tape on the outside of it and you can't tell from the inside. I have a new one on the shelf.

Re: How do yo remove a glovebox without destroying it?

I have removed mine a few times without damage, I just took out all the screws, collapsed it diagonally a little and the pulled it through the hole. I do get confused each time, eventually I get it set just right and it almost falls out! Just be patient. If you lose your patience just rip it out and stomp on it! A new one only cost $15 or so,

Rubbish. I've had mine out 2 or 3 times. Of course, it's new and not 40 years old. I like to start on the right side, carefully pulling the edge of the cardboard past the lip on the dash and working my way around. Once you get about half of it out, the other half slips right out. Just take your time with it. It might help to have a couple of beers on hand too...

To stick mine in I took the whole heater/A/C box out.

Unless it was kept in a climate controlled garage and never used or the truck left in the sun it's probably going to crack or tear.

Cardboard simply doesn't last 40 years. I wouldn't worry about it though. If it tears simply order another. I've replace mine twice in the last 20 years. Texas heat is not kind to paper.

Re: How do yo remove a glovebox without destroying it?

it needs to be squished to remove by pulling out thru the glovebox hole// old petrified ones normally crumble when you try it tho

I'm gonna make a bolt together one out of either steel or plastic..
I might even make a 2 piece fiberglass one..
I figure as good as place as any to learn how to make a fiber part..

I got my cardboard one out.. but it took forever..

Re: How do yo remove a glovebox without destroying it?

I have done it many times.
Remove all your hardware like screws and latches and so on and the glove door. Assure the heater/A/C hoses in back are not in the way. Next slowly start working the glove box at the top pushing back and pulling toward you; you have to have lots of patience for this part. A small straight slot screw driver may be helpful to slide along to work edges out. Once your satisfied with the top part being free then start on the bottom and if you can work the sides as well. The goal is to get it where you can get it sideways as much as possible then slowly remove it. If the cardboard is really brittle or badly falling apart, you may want to consider a 10 dollar replacement through a Vendor of your choice. Good Luck, if I was there I would help out.

Re: How do yo remove a glovebox without destroying it?

My '72 had it's original in up until i decided to upgrade the stereo, antenna, wiper motor and washer pump. It had been removed once when we restored it 20 years ago and was extremely brittle when I tried to remove it a month ago. I ended up ordering a new one from LMC and after comparing them, I feel that it's a very nice replacement!
