What did you get done 5/1/11 edition

I took delivery of my new used bed and pressure washed it. Its got a far cry less rot than the prior one and is easilly repaired. the rest of the weekend was spent playing with my new toy pics to follow

How about you all?

Got the 81 shortbox out of storage and went over to Port Huron to take advantage of the cheaper tire prices and got some new BFG radial T/A's put on the front.

Applied the first layer of "clean" since last year! Also, haul away trash from our Spring church picnic.

Re: What did you get done 5/1/11 edition

Suburban engine blew on the highway towing trailer...
Spend a good chunk of saturday and sunday pulling the 454 out of the engine bay!
Everything on this 83 is still original. It has the stock hoses and water pump and everything. The carb was rebuilt at some point.
Found a good hole/punch on the side of the oil pan...
Machine shop, here we come!

Re: What did you get done 5/1/11 edition

I pulled the Blue 77 out of the barn and brought it up to the house . I bolted a couple of my Intro 20's on it to see what I think of it . I will be putting an engine in it over the next couple months and looking at paint prices. Still undecided on the direction for this truck.
Anyone think I need to leave the scenery in the back window and the wood grained bed rails?

Re: What did you get done 5/1/11 edition

i took the seat out of my C10 and heavily cleaned the interior......it hadnt been out since it initially went in, so i took it out, vacuumed everything and shampooed the entire interior. i also re riveted the bottom of my seatbelt cover and tightened the wire that allows the seat adjuster on pass. side to move.

I also changed the oil with some valv. 10w-40 and a Wix filter.

Lose the flares, put them in a box, and send them to MN

Since I like odd things, the scenery and rails look good together, but it doesn't go with the wheels you threw on there...tough call though.

Re: What did you get done 5/1/11 edition

Frank I am not big on blue, but that color and those wheels rock. The bed rails are a great GM accessory item. Since the holes are there I would leave them for now. If you get it painted, I would weld them up.

This is the first weekend in months that I didn't have commitments to work projects other than my truck. I finally got going Saturday morning after some Spring time pool maintenance.

I found out that to convert a 77 truck to a 73-74 grill it requires a lot more than the 73-74 center brace if you have an optional internal hood release. Fortunately I had enough parts in my stash to make it work.

I have everything in final mock up and ready to be torn down for detail.

Re: What did you get done 5/1/11 edition

Frank, if you ditch those bed rails, you'll be able to sell them quickly I would imagine. I'd get in line myself for them.

Messed with my 79 K5 this weekend. Took the right exhaust manifold off to get at this little device that closes and opens the exhaust. Got it out, blew out the butterfly with the torch, and reassembled. Broke a bolt off in the head upon reassembly. Had a guy in my shop doing some PDR work, he decided he could drill and tap it for me. After he tapped it, I had antifreeze coming out the bolt hole (joy). Drilled it again, put a heli-coil in along with heat resistant sealer and finished it up (no leaks! was a bonus).
Took off the EGR and put a block off plate on and took about 100 feet of unneeded vacuum lines out and plugged up a ton of stuff (emissions). Looks a lot neater under the hood at least, runs like a champ. Now to get the transmission working better.

In a few weeks I'll be doing the 73/74 grille swap myself and messing with the internal latch vs the external. But I got an entire 74 truck sitting here for parts.

Re: What did you get done 5/1/11 edition

Figured out that I need to change the ignition module in the truck before I continue any further. I can only get it to run for about 30 seconds plugged into the computer. When I unplug the computer it wont fire at all or continue to run after it is started.
I also took a friends 17 year old boy turkey hunting in the morning. Shot a coyote at 38 yards, 40 minnutes later we shot a turkey in the exact same spot! Not a bad day at all!

Re: What did you get done 5/1/11 edition

FINALLY got my '77 running!!!!! checked the vacuum reading and it stays at a STEADY 20". Can wait to finish this thing. Still have to get belts and grommets for the valve covers and an air filter. Then it's off to the smog station.

Re: What did you get done 5/1/11 edition

Hey F.Monroe, How did you get that stance in your truck. My truck has 2 and 1 half inch drop spindles. It sat to low in the front with 2 inch shorter coils, so today with the original height coils it sits one inch lower in the rear. If I cut one coil out of the front coils will that lower the front one inch? I want it to sit a little low, but level.

Believe me I am tired of working on the front end of the truck. The PO messed it up. I guess I will cut one coil and hope for the best.
