auto shiofter help super tough to shift

first time shifting this column in the last 20 years. it was in the cab im using . and since im doing a manual to auto swap im using it. but the damn thing is super hard to shift . Im sure its probably just a lube issue. IVE DISCONECTED IT FROM STEERING COLUMN AND SHIFTED WITH MY HAND SO IT IS DEFINITELY NOT THE LINKAGE . but i have no idea what to take apart to lube any simple fixes to thios before i give up and buy a different column? i shift the trany manual and thats a piece of cake . but the shifter man thats stiff.. any help for a mediocre parts swapper is gladly welcomed and apprecieated!!!!

I had the same problem and I shot PB Lubricator down and around where the shifter enters the column and BAM, smooth as silk, it really tripped me out how well it worked. Should work for you too if there are no mechanical binding issues.

Re: auto shiofter help super tough to shift

More than likely it needs relubing as mentioned above. If you're not sure, you can simply disconnect the link at the column.

If you're sure it's in the column then do as suggested above and slowly work the shift lever up and down. Do not use extreme force or you will break the shift lever pivot end.

On my old 69 I actually removed the column and dismantled everything and regreased the shift column and steering mechanism.

Re: auto shiofter help super tough to shift

i like to spray heavily with WD40 to clean out old dirt dust and petrified grease then when it has loosened up i'll spray with white lithium grease for a longer lasting lubrication effect

Re: auto shiofter help super tough to shift

i had the same problem, took the steering wheel and horn/turn signal stuff off and there's a cylinder that slides up and down the steering column and they were binding together. put a small amount of brake parts grease on it and she's good as new.

yes, once you get the wheel and horn/turn signal out of the way you will be able to move the shift lever and see exactly what I'm talking about. just pay careful attention to how everything comes out.
