Poor Man's Gas Pedal Mod for 68-pics

So I am at the junkyard and I find the gas pedal assembly you see in the pic and the ashtray with bearings, got both for a total of 5 bucks. I was looking at the gas pedal and thinking about the adapter thread I have seen and was wondering something. My truck has the stock gas pedal but when I got it the actual pedal was missing. I drove it that way for a long time and liked the control actually. When I finally put the pedal I ordered in it felt stiff and wrong but I did install it right. I considered putting a 72 era pedal on the existing stock 68 set-up to keep it off the floor but was worried about how it would not pivot. Anyway, on the back of the pedal in the pic is a spring that allows it to go forward some and return on its own. Couldn't I adapt just the pedal and spring return in the pic to my existing accelerator arm. It would keep it off the floor and allow it to pivot. Granted it would not be a cable system like the full mod people do but could it work?

Or should I use what I found and convert to a full cable system?

Can't really answer your question, but I agree, I like mine better without the pedal there. On my 66, I had the pedal come half off and wedge against the throttle rod and the tunnel....talk about a pucker factor moment. I think I'll just leave the throttle rod and call it good

when the pedal is missing and you drive with just the rod, it starts to hurt your foot if cruising for more than 30 or so min if you wear converse chuck taylors

Convert to the cable. I did the same thing. I love the floating pedal!

Well, here is what I'm thinking:

Measure from the bend to the end on the 68 pedal rod. Cut it off a portion of the way up, say 3 inches or so, from where the pedal touches it. From the measurement taken at the beginning, cut about the same amount on the "new" floating pedal. Then weld them together with a sleeve over them for added strength. It should come out the same, if not better than the original. Maybe this has been done before, but I think it looks cleaner with the floating pedal. I haven't done this yet, just getting ideas together to do it. What do you think?

I think the old pedal & rod fit the nostalgia of the era of truck, I don't mind mine at all.JMO

I'd convert to the full cable system. Less linkage to fall apart in rush hour traffic

I'd convert as well. It's an easy install with LFD's adapter.

I kind of like the idea of cutting and welding it on since the spring behing the pedal maintains its position. I really don't want to convert to cable since I just hoked up the linkage from my 700r4 to the throttle linkage. I think if the mod is done right it shuold almost feel the same. Plus I like a challenge to do something new.
