Re: can a gear box be rebuilt?

Way easier to just buy a new one. Not sure if they can or not but i have heard some bad stories of a rebuild gone wrong.

Re: can a gear box be rebuilt?

rebuild?? I know there is some adjustment in them BUT if its worn only centered then the worm gear is worn and if you adjust it then it wil be TO TIGHT at the rest of the turning swing... try turning your wheel to one side and see if you have play there..if you do you can loosen the 9/16" might be 1/2" jam nut then turn the center bolt ( might be a screw driver, small bolt or allen wrench I can remember) 1/2 turn in and try it again...be gentel with adjustments.....this should get the play out....

Be careful not to over adjust it...obviuosly the center wears out first since the wheels are there most, so make your adjustments with the wheels turned off center..

AND CHECK THE REST OF YOUR STEERING PARTS FIRST including the rag joint

good luck and let us know if it works

Re: can a gear box be rebuilt?

^^^^ Should this be done with the truck running, since its power steering or does it matter? Also should the truck be jacked up or on the ground?

Iluvmy72, you have any luck trying this?

Re: can a gear box be rebuilt?

If you rebuild it, the balls inside it are two different sizes. If they are not staggered perfectly, it will not turn. Get a good book, and dont attack it blind like I did. I still have that box, and someday I will tear into it again.

Re: can a gear box be rebuilt?

If you have play in the wheel, it's more likely not the gearbox, but rather other worn suspension parts; pitman arm, idler arm, rag joint, tie rods.
