Brakes and lugs

Ok finally have my burb but I still havent gotten my pics up yet, but I will tonight.....here is my problem.

I have drums in the front and drums in the back (69 GMC 1/2 ton) 6 lug pattern.

I am just tring to figure out the cheapest way to get to 5 lugs, and the best way.
really I wouldnt care if they stayed 6 lug, but I dont think I can get any new style wheels on because of the drums, so I figure I need to get the front and rear disc conversions( $$$$$ ouch) and then it would still be 6 lug but then i could get new style wheels on.....correct??

I just dont have all the money right now to do it all, can the factory drums be machined down (the lip) would just love some input on the best way to do this. I havent looked at my drums yet either, that is just what I have been reading on here. basically wanna know how to get new style wheels on my burb, and not spend 2000 dollars on the brakes at this time.????

Re: Brakes and lugs

If I were you, I'd use the rearend out of a 71-72 coil spring truck if you can get it
I'm not sure about using a 73-87 rearend....Is your burb leaf springs?

Re: Brakes and lugs

no it is coil springs. I have no problem keeping the rear end, just trying to figure out how to put new style wheels on old style drums....

Re: Brakes and lugs

I'm no wheel expert, so you'll need to do your homework on the backspacing and what can be used......just FYI...I picked up a complete front and rear suspension from a 71 truck for $150.....so keep your eyes peeled for deals....also watch the parts board...folks part trucks all the time.....by chance is member 'teeitup' close to you? he ususally has some suspension stuff

Re: Brakes and lugs

If you want five spoke wheels, you will need to convert. Almost any other style wheel is manufactured in both six and five lug. As for fit, a 14" alloy rim will usually fit front drums, but would NOT fit over disc calipers.
Lowered spindles are only available for disc brakes, but you can choose five lug or six lug rotors if you do the conversion with a new aftermarket kit.
My burb had the 71-72 suspension swapped in when I got it, so I have five lug rotors in the front. I like my 3.07 twelve bolt rear and wide 4wd ralley wheels in the back, so I'm in no hurry to convert the back to five lug
