Anyone ever traded parts for work?

I talked to a mechanic today that I was inquiring to remove a perfectly working 7.4 TBI engine from 94 suburban and take out a 5.7 from a 96 burb and put it in the 94 with some TBI conversion. I was going to pay him 300 for the one day job but instead he wants the TBI 7.4 for his 69 truck. Now part of me wants to see that 69 setup with the 454. But the other part of me is saying he's ripping me off considering the engine only has 178,000 miles. But then again he's probably gonna stroke the motor....oh man...what would you guy's choose? The motor would just sit here anyway.

Around here 454 stuff has taken a nose dive in the last 10 years. For something with 178k miles, it will probably need rebuilt. No way I'd pull 2 and put 1 back for $300 anyway, more like $600. Sounds like a fair trade to me.

if the motor is just going to sit there any way, i would say it is a fair trade...you are not out anything.

See to me, paying 1 grand for a single day's work seems a little outrageous to me no matter what the job is.

I have done my fair share of engines swaps in the past for myself and my buddies. That's right much work to do for what you're gonna have done. I think it's a fair trade and would do it. Plus like mentioned you won't have it sitting around in your and someone could get some use out of it. I traded some wheels to get my seat recovered a couple of years ago. My buddy/coworker does car seats as a side job. He had a ford van and was looking for some 8" steel wheels. I had a set and made him the offer if he covered my seat I would give him the wheels for his labor. He agreed, seat turned out great, I was happy, he was happy with his wheels, and I got rid of something that I didn't need and was in my way.

I have never had any luck with trading for work. I once rebuilt a large compressor for an excellent custom body shop (thats what I did for a living). It cost me about $600, retail about $2000 for the job. In turn, he was going to do the body work on the front clip of my 55, and put it in primer. I rebuilt the compressor overnight, and picked up my front clip 5 months later with 90% more damage than when I dropped it off. They were sitting exactly where I left them, just had ALOT of bent scrap metal sitting on them. "He got busy, and had no time for FREE work".

That's when I would have handed him a bill for the rebuild.
