Rattle can paint job
Just curious I have bought a 78 chevy short bed its got a strong 350 in it. I bought this truck cheap. I like the flat black rattle can look some of yall are doin. My question is does it not scratch easy with like everything that touches it reason i ask i done my hood and it scratchs off easily. Any info would be appreciated. Now keep in mind im building this thing just to run around town and pi** the popo off. Not really looking for a show car. Just a fast little hell raiser. Thanks Johnny

Did you sand off the old paint and clear coat?
If not it will tend to come off easy. I spray canned my 82 grey and it held up well. I sanded as much as I cared to do by hand. I beat on my truck and did not care much about scratches, I would just touched it up. Great thing about spray can paint jobs...

Yeah, you have to sand it, prime it, then paint it. The rattle can paint will last a surprisingly long time if the surface is prepped correctly.

Hey truck lovers. Newbie from N.C. I sprayed my 67 ''longbread'' with a harbor freight spray gun and quarts of chalkboard paint ,enamel,from home depot.It kept it from rusting ,looked pretty dogone good,and we had a blast chalk drawing on it .Every time it got dull I just sprayed over it with a new light coat.

I did mine with rattle can about a year ago used krylon flat black on it NOT primer. I used a rough scotch bright pad on the whole truck to scuff it up. Now im paying for it cause I decided I wanna sand it all down and do body work and make a show truck. Im sanding through 3 different colors of paint now... But it help up didn't really scratch easily although I did scotch bright the black after it was done with the light grit one to give it a matte finish.. check out the pictures in my build thread if you wanna see it.

What, the flames or the paint.....lol....we did a 57 belair chrome stripe down the side that looked killer.The more naturals I had the better it looked ,but it rained that night. Woke up the next morning with a clean slate and a headache.

Sanded entire truck with 180-220-300, then a very steady hand and strong fingers. Lol

I don't know if it makes a difference but when I rattle canned the interior of my truck I just took a rough scotch bright pad and scuffed everything down (I did have to sand the melted weatherstripping off) and then just put black coats on until I couldn't see any brown anymore.....I have yet to see how well it holds up though...

The Rustoleum flat black seems to blend well with previous applications, so I figure if it scratches I can just repaint that area and it will blend pretty well. I did some car parts that are just bare steel stock, and touched them up later and I couldn't tell where I sprayed the newer stuff from the older...

Yeah you do need a strong finger to do the whole truck haha!!! I'm gonna start on my frame soon too and probably gonna use that rustoleum professional series on it and see how it holds up...Not too concerned with how it holds up really cause you wont be able to see the frame when I do the body drop on the truck. And yeah I was happy with the way it turned out after I was done no streaks like you see on a lot of peoples spray bombs you know....

appreciate all the helpful info gonna give the rattle can a shot. I got a 99 softail custom that i had a body shop paint flat black and love it just dont want to spend that kind of money on this truck not rite now anyways.

China freight makes a nifty little deal for rattle-canning without wearing your fingers out so bad.
I can't find it on their website but I've seen it in their stores. Definitely buy two if you find them. The first one WILL break halfway through. That's just the way their stuff is. |

Farm impliment paint is very tough. Rustoleum and Krylon seem to spray the smoothest. Definitely rough up the surface.
