Head work
I am installing new valve seals and need some help. It is my first time and I removed my first valve and noticed that OEM seals are o ring style. Now my replacement seals are umbrella style. Do I need to replace the o ring or just use the new style?

Have used both. The o ring style is oe.the umbrella seal work great .

Depends on the style of seal.If they have a ring around the base you will need to have the guides machined.The old style rebuilder umbrella seals just pushed on the guide.Done alot of cylinder heads with no issues.

Post a picture of the seals you have and we can I dentify them for you .. if it is a late model head some are machined from the factory for seals that grip the guide.. Other than that a simple umbrella seal does just that it does not contact the guide simply makes the oil run over the top not down the guide ..

use both , it's just a bit more protection .... o ring goes on after the spring is compressed ... Believe me , in Detroit I have seen people use the wrong seals .. You may want to check the retainer to guide clearance to make sure the seal is not too tall.........

bottom groove, top groove is for the keeper. go slowly when you release the spring compressor and guide the retainer as it's coming up so as not to pinch the o-ring
what year are these heads? I thought everthing for the last 30 years was machined for the umbrella's
