How to inspect a new project

I am currently looking for a 1947-53 chevy pickup and I was wondering where to start the inspection. I know I need to check the cab corners and the doors for rust but where should I look. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Get underneath if at all possible. Take someone with you thats experinced also. That will speed things up a bit, since you really need to comb through the entire rig as much as possible. Just don't get in a hurry. The higher the price the harder i would examine it. Espescially if you live in an area thats prone to rust cars fast. Happy hunting! And post pics if you find something.
BTW welcome to the board its the best on net.

I agree, make sure the person you take with you is fairly cynical. I have more than one friend who purchased vehicles cause they liked them and were willing to look past the issues. In the end it cost them big.

Re: How to inspect a new project

Front lower cowl rust is a bigger issue than rear corners in my area. Right behind where the front fenders bolt to the cab. Check inside in the kick panels. If rust has reached there you will be welding in inner and outer cowl patches most likely.

Check the floor around the front cab mounts and where the firewall meets the floor pans. Lower door jams and rockers too.

Frame rot generally starts around the parking brake crossmember or behind the spring hangers.
