Anyone ever made the switch
Ok, I'm thinking about a square body cc or mostly cc dually. I def need more room and possibility of occasional tow, as far as gas increase what am I looking at?
Current setup is, 305, 4 edelbrock carb, true dual w/ flowmater mufflers, and cats. Cc will not be my dd. Anyone ever made the switch from swb to cc or cc dually. If you can give examples, for 350 and 454 for gas. Can a 350 have the same towing power as a 454? Did cc come as 305? Thanks for advice. Posted via Mobile Device |

my current truck is an 82 LWB with a 305 and th350.. i dont get more than 9 MPG city so i sincerely doubt id do any worse in a CC

I traded my 74 short fleet for a CC dually last year so I'm prob qualified to answer....
The 74 had the original, tired, 350/2-barrel/t350 set-up under the hood. It also has a 12-bolt w/3.73's & mpgs were definitely nothing to brag about (10-ish mpg). The dually is a 454/t400 throttle body FI truck. Jon said it has 3.73's but I think it prob has 4.10's since it's in a very similar rpm range as the 74 was buzzing down the highway (the 74 was 3.73's w/a 29" tall rear tires; the dually has 31.72" tall tires). The dually gets 8-9mpg. So for me, the difference was negligable. Less than 2mpg difference but upgrading (size/towing capacity) to a cc dually. I've driven it approx 150 miles a week since I got it. Soon enough, my 64 short fleet should be my daily beater so it won't matter. Even using it daily w/my limited milage, the 8mpgs/occassional use of the paid for dually is still waaaaaaaaaaaay cheaper than a new CC turbo diesel dually.

I get 13-16MPG (depending on my driving) with my CCSB 350TBI/700R-4/3.73 gears/30" tall tires, but it is 1/2 ton and I don't want to do any heavy hauling with it. I pulled the wife's '66 1/2 ton short fleet with a load on it and a pretty heavy load in my truck and I got 10-12MPG on the 4500 mile trip to Alaska

I got 6mpg with a 454tbi400 combo. Crew cab shorty. I just started back driving it with 5.3 swap. It is getting 14-15 in town now and the tune is a little rich, so it should go up to 16-18 maybe. Jay

I am sorry to admit it, but I love to hear other people getting terrible mileage, because it makes mine sound not so bad. I'm getting 7.5 around town (I know better than to drive on the highway). Just bought the rebuild kit for my q-jet, it's not working real well and it did sit for a couple years, so I'm hoping to eke out a tiny bit more mileage with a freshened up carb. My friend has a pile of 1 ton 454 carbed trucks, all restored and he says he gets 10 with the duallys, 2wd gets 14. Drives like an old man and knows them inside and out. He said with a fresh carb and good tune I shouldn't expect to see more than 10.
It's killing me right now with prices so high, but on the plus side, I know guys with 2000 and up 6.0 liters only getting 11-12 mpg. If I can get 10 mpg with a 454 4bbl 3 speed auto and 4:10 gears in a paid-for truck, I see no reason to spend $20-$40k on a newer one that will only get 1 or 2 more mpg.

that right there is why i won't get a new truck....whats the point then when it gets funky up it HAS to be hooked to a puter.......$$ bro in law companys truck ford about 3/4 years old....new brakes all over + tuneup stuff for etest......almost 3000.00 with tax thats a lotta gas,and few carbs lol

I have a very tired 86 swb with a wore out 305 and it get s about 12 around town. me and my wife just purchased a 88 crew with a 350 and when we drove it home from ohio it got 13.5 around town im about 11-12. both engines are stock and wore out. im hoping to rebuild both of them soon and get at least 17 in town with a 700r4 swap.
