5 speed manual question
I'm looking to buy a early 90s TBI truck to install the TBI onto No Buck. If I could find a truck with a 5 speed that would be a bonus. What 5 speeds were available back then? Is the V-6 5 speed the same one that was behind a V-8?
I don't know if I'd actually swap the 5 speed into no buck since it already has a 4 speed and 3.08 gears (OD may be too much for it). But I figure it would be nice to have the option. |

Re: 5 speed manual question
NV3500/NV4500,
The S10's had a 5speed also. Those were very light duty. the NV3500 was behind some of the truck v8's

Re: 5 speed manual question
NV3500, granny low and o/d. I had one behind the 4.3L TBI and it went 200K without any issues, except a clutch because my sister learned to drive stick on it.
They did also come behind V8's like clyde said. I believe the clutch is hydraulic and on the passenger side?

Re: 5 speed manual question
excuse me Ackattack I am NOT trying to hijack your thread but I have a question I am going to run a 454 and I want to put the nv4500 behind it. I know the 4500 is a hyd clutch set up BUT can it be mated to a older bellhousing and run a conventional clutch with a throwout bearing ???? COOP

Re: 5 speed manual question
The NV3500's were behind some of the 305's and 350's. They will hold up fine as long as you don't beat on them too much. IIRC they are rated at 300 ftlbs.. My son inlaw has a '96 K1500 with the L31 Vortec and a NV3500 behind it. The L31 Vortec is supposed to put out 330 ftlbs.

Re: 5 speed manual question
Read notes above.
Is there a 5 speed that will bolt directly into a '68 C10 with no modifications. Truck began life as a 6 cylinder. Already has a stock 3 speed, drive shaft, and 12 bolt I changed to 3:08 posi Has a 350 in it now. COOTERUSN Last edited by COOTERUSN; 05-22-2011 at 09:45 AM. Reason: clarify "with no modifications" |

Re: 5 speed manual question

Re: 5 speed manual question
Well, if the NV3500 was behind some V8's and V6's, why wouldnt they just bolt up? the v8's we are talking about are 350TBI's right? The v6's are just 350's with 2 cylinders chopped off.
I think they would bolt up no problem, however I bet there is a difference in bell housings, I would go to a boneyard and pick up a 5speed with all the hyd stuff

Re: 5 speed manual question
Yes that is true, the NV3500 will bolt up to a 350. But the driveshaft will need to be shortened. Since the NV3500 is a hydraulically operated clutch, the truck will need to be converted over to a hydro clutch. Then depending on what trans hump he has, that may need to be changed.
COOTERUSN asked about a 5 speed conversion with nomodifications.....I don't think this qualifies as no modifications. Quote:
