HELP! Leaky water pump or hose or something

Well sh!t! After wrestling with my new short water pump all day, I got it in but can't get it to stop leaking. I even got a new lower hose. The pump is from a Corvette, it was all Autozone had that would fit. The only thing I can think of is that the pump came with a very short rod, the same width and about half the length of the bolts used for the pump. Was this necessary to put in the pump somewhere? It looked like the bolt would seal the hole but h3ll if I know. Can anyone help out? It leaks like a sieve and I need to get it on the road and this is all I lack. Do I need to pull the pump and stick this piece back in somewhere? Any help would be MUCH appreciated!

Thanks!
Jason

almost sounds like the gaskets aren't right..............or is it leaking thru the back gasket of the pump?

That sounds like the pin that goes on one side of the water pump. I think it is the side with the lower hose neck. 2 of the holes have bolts in them, the 3rd had that pin. Now it shouldn't really matter if it is there or not because the gasket still seals that area. I don't know what that pin does but I do remember putting it in on my 65-327.

It SEEMS to be leaking from the lower radiator hose but I can't be 100% sure. The heater hose fitting is dry for sure, as are the flanges where the pump attaches to the block. I know many of my accessories are from a 327 if that makes a difference. Will leaving out that pin make a difference? Shouls I tear it all off and put it in? Getting that pump on was a b!tch with my aftermarket A/C brackets so the thought of doing it again peeves me. I guess the casting of the pump could be too rough to seal but it leaks pretty badm about 2 drops a second. Could my hose clamps be bad? They seem ok, but dang, I'm kinda desperate.

Try new hose clamps and triple check that the radiator hose is ALL of the way on and that the clamps are tight. Sounds obvious but sometimes the solutions are that easy. Good clamps are cheap and worth it.

If still leaking, even though it might be another pain in the @$$, I would recomend taking off the pump, scraping both the block and pump clean of all gastket sealant and anything else, checking pump for any obvious warpage and then install new gaskets with liberal and very well placed sealant.

I'd do what I could to help ya if you were closer to help with the stress. Good luck!

The hose is on ALL the way and the clamps are as tight as they will go. I'll go get new ones just to be sure. Thanks for the help so far, guys. Keep 'em comin'!

That sounds like the pump shaft seal leaking. There is a small hole under the shaft casting --see if the leak is coming from it. If so--bad pump.

Well damn, the water seems to be coming through the lower bolt hole in the casing. Does that help any? I can get some pics later.

Yes, the bolt holes go thru the block into the water jacket, and needs to have a good pipe joint sealant on them to prevent the coolant from following the bolt out ...
