60-66 trucks question

Did the steering columns have a indicator light on the column for gear selection on auto transmissions?

Re: 60-66 trucks question

Yes, sort of, inside the column is a bulb that lights up with your light switch, it throws light through a hole on the column onto the plastic selector.

As said above, only on auto columns and I think they were available for the 2,3 or 4 speed hydro.

Re: 60-66 trucks question

Good. I was wanting to verify that my steering column had not been changed out for a later year model.

Mine, has the light and the bulb is good. Tested the bulb. But when inserted into the column socket, no light.

Leads?

Re: 60-66 trucks question

turn signal switch or not grounding on the column properly?

see if there is continuity from the socket to the column base.

Re: 60-66 trucks question

This column was repainted at some time in the past and so was the wiring. Do you know the TRUE COLOR of the wire inside the column that goes to that particular socket? I cannot locate anything in the truck wiring diagrams.

Thanks for the help!

Re: 60-66 trucks question

I just did a restore on mine, and the wire is gray. And also my bulb didnt fit too well. I had to take a pair of pliers and close up the socket a little. Thats all i know.

Re: 60-66 trucks question

OK. Now I need some direction after not being able to find the answer in the wiring diagram.

RE: 1964 C-10

The gray wire from the gear indicator light socket in the steering column flows thru the dash wiring harness directly to the fuse box, where it is connected into the "GAS GUAGE EXT" along with the tan wire from the fuel sender unit (coming from the gas tank).

The gear indicator light will not illuminate, nor does a test light in the socket illuminate. My fuel guage works.

What's my next step in solving the gear indicator light issue?

Re: 60-66 trucks question

The fuel sender wire is actually a ground for the fuel gauge, so no power there. The gray wire fron your column indicator light needs to connect to one of the other gray wires that go to the other lights in your dash. There should be a connector somewhere, I just don't remember where it is. If nothing else you can splice into one of the other gray wires.

Re: 60-66 trucks question

When I remove the gray wire for the bulb socket from the location indicated previously and plug it directly into a non-ign terminal on the fuse box, it lights.

I know this is an old post, but:
Mine has the powerglide selector, but I put 400 turbo in it and I'm wondering can you get the selector lense with P R N 3 2 1? Not sure if it has a light on not, I'm in the process of reviving it, so when I put a battery in it I'll check

Re: 60-66 trucks question

As far as I know the only shift indicators that are reproduced are for the Powerglide pattern. Some of the '66 C20 trucks did come with TH400's, and finding one of those shift indicators would be a bit unlikely. In my Suburban, I just left the Powerglide indicator in there. There is supposed to be a light to illuminate the shift indicator.
