Need Some Help - Decision Time

Need Some Help - Decision Time

I need some help making the decision on keeping or selling the 4WD for a 2WD?

I keep going back to wanting a 2WD but the 4WD is a killer truck too??????

I checked on the production numbers for the K15 and it comes up with, Just 30 total units produced in 1966. This just kills me when I think about everything I want to do. This 1966 K15 Factory 4x4 Cab and Chassis should be restored back to original.

http://reocities.com/MotorCity/speed...roduction1.htm

I was originally looking for a 1966 Short Fleet for my shop truck. Should I keep the 1966 K15 Factory 4x4 or sell/trade for a 1966 C10 Short Fleet?

I really want a 1966 BBW Short Fleet 2WD and I am thinking about offering my 1966 K15 Factory 4x4 up for sale or trade on a 1966 2WD Short Fleet in similar shape/value.

I found this 1966 K15 Factory 4x4 Cab/Chassis with real low miles (31,300 on it when purchased). It is almost completely stock and spent most of its years as a Park Service Truck up by San Francisco. I drove it almost 10 hours home in 100+ degree heat. It has been my Daily Driver for almost 2 years now. It has about 43,000 miles on it now.

I just purchased a 1964 Big Window Cab and have started the restoration on the Cab and all forward sheetmetal. This cab and forward sheetmetal will be used for the truck I decide to keep.

I have a Steel Bed Floor, 1 1/4 Ton Axles and Steel 17x9 Wheels that can be added to the sale or trade if needed.

This is the 1966 K15 Factory 4x4 and a build thread I started - http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=455484

Nice 4 x 4.... So, the title of this thread is "Need Some Help - Decision Time" but there are no question marks in your text?

What help are you looking for?

Slap a nice coat of paint on the 4x4 and get some good cash for it and then buy or build a sick 2wd shop truck.

Re: Need Some Help - Decision Time

I've owned WAY too many 4x4's in my life and while I love the look, I can't say I've really used a 4x4 for anything other than getting the dirt bike up a hill and I didn't NEED 4wd to do it.

My last truck was a F@rd F350 diesel that I loved. But in the 18 months I had it, I had never once shifted into 4wd. So I sold it and bought my '66. For me a 4x4 is great if you actually use it. Otherwise it has too many moving parts to fix and more points of failure. So I'll stick to low and slow.

Re: Need Some Help - Decision Time

IMHO you should buy/build whatever you really want. It costs thousands of dollars and a lot of time building any vintage vehicle, and I’ve learned over the years it’s better to invest all that time and money into what you really want. Since your truck is in such nice shape, a long bed, and 4 wheel drive it might be more financially advantageous (and a lot less work) to sell it and buy a different truck rather than chop it up for reconfiguring.

My answer could be perceived as biased since I have little interest in 4x4 vehicles, but I would offer the same advice even if the question was reversed. Good luck on whatever you choose to do.

Re: Need Some Help - Decision Time

i vote to keep the 4x4, theyre unique!

**1966 K15 Factory 4x4 Cab and Chassis - 30 total units produced in 1966

thats saying something.

my 65 has 4wd and i do use it every once in a while (in snow, putting in boats, and ive taken it on the beach a handful of times), i never beat on it and offroad it though.

I spent forever looking for a 4wd from this era though so i may be biased. i just prefer the 4wd look to the 2 wheel.

but in the end if its better for you, economically, easier, personal preference, or the fact that you dont wanna cut up something so rare and original, do what you want

I agree, it is hard to stray from original on a low production truck with low miles. Thanks!

I will trade a 2 wheel drive truck for 4x4. If you like 63's long bed.

Re: Need Some Help - Decision Time

I already have a real nice Big Window Cab and front sheetmetal that I am restoring. I am going to look for an optioned out truck with A/C if I can find one. I am not too worried about the sheetmetal, it just needs a good frame to build and titled as a C10 Short Fleet.

Here are the pictures of the BBW Cab and Front Sheetmetal back from Media Blasting

That's a '65, you can tell by the location of the emblem on the cowl. In '66 GM moved the emblem down to the fender.

Re: Need Some Help - Decision Time

The truck is on e-bay. If it sells I will build a 2WD if it doesnt sell then I will build the 4WD. I keep going back and forth. I really want a 2WD Short Fleet, but this 4WD is a great truck that is alot of fun too.

Yeah, I really like it and the ol guy would like for me to buy it but it does have a lot of rust in the floors, rockers and cab corners.

Re: Need Some Help - Decision Time

Man, I would love to have that 4x4, perfect height and wheel/tire combo too. It's pretty much necessary up in my corner of Ca., plus almost all of our recreation is off road up here. If you would have posted this shortly before I had bought my 2wd 65, I would be trying hard to talk you into selling it to me. Unfortunately I do not have the cash to make any offer, and my 2wd 65 doesn't fit with your desires. I can't really tell you what you should do, but if that truck was in my hands it would stay with me until I was in the ground.
