Headlight relays need help with them

Im about 1/2 way done. It wont be clean but the next one I'll do will be now that I know how.

Do I run 2 wires from the battery to the relays? or can I tie the 2 post on the relay together, then put 1 inline fuse before the battery?

Do I have to use 2 fuses?

And is 85 on both relays ground?


1 Read the artical
2 Parts list 2 bosch relays, spade connecters, wire, and inline fuse.
3 Look at wiring sheet
4 Decide that you can do this
5 Start by finding the 14LG and the 18LT wire on the back of the left headlamp.
6 Disconnect the (-Neg) battery cable. Mount the relays to the core support above the horn. You may have to make room for them.
7 Follow the 14LG wire towards the fuseblock. Mark it. This is the one to cut.
8 Follow the 18LT wire towards the fuseblock. Mark it 1st. Cut this one also.
9 Do the wiring:
cut 18LT (or low beam) and run the wire from the fuseblock to Terminal 86 on the relay.
run the other end and that comes from the headlamp plug to Terminal 87 on the relay.
cut 14LG (or hi beam) and run the wire from the fuse block to the Terminal 86 on the 2nd relay. run the other end to Terminal 87 of the 2nd relay.
10 Terminal 85 goes to ground.
11 Run a heavy wire (12ga.) from + Battery Post to Terminal 30 of both relays. Just run it through the stock wiring across the radiator. Add a inline fuse on this one.
12 make sure every thing is connected, secure wires,
replace (- battery cable )
13 Enjoy Brighter Head Lights

Run a separate fused wire to each relay. You don't want a failed fuse to take out both your high beam and low beam.

And yes, 85 is ground on each relay.

Did everyone make the cut just after the wire gutter across radiator? Or did you cut just in front of the inner driver side fender?

Im ready to go, I just wanna know where I should 'snip' at. Ive already snipped at the front of the inner fender, but could I snip above the horn and get same results but cleaner look?

I would love to do these mod but it sounds confusing to me!!

I think I will probably take the easy way out and just buy the set up from LMC.

I got it.

Its really not hard at all, the directions are just confusing as heck!!!

You need a roll of black 14 guage, red 10 guage misc electrical connectors shrink wrap etc etc

Took me around 4 hours but im slow as heck, didnt know what I was doing etc etc etc

Its quite quite easy and the lights are WAY brighter, I just gotta get em adjusted!! Cleaning up the wirnig tomorow! This goes down with disc brakes and swaybar for the front!

You can pull your power off the horn relay. I like it better then a bunch of wires going to the battery and the horn relay buss bar should be pretty close to 14V all the time. In my 72 I ran an 8 ga. wire up to the radiator support to an insulated terminal block that I used to power the relays. I like to use fusible link as well in all the power circuits but fuses work too.

I used a self resetting circuit breaker. Then took +12V off of that to the hot side of each relay.

I didn't snip any wires. I simply slid them out of the back of the factory connectors by depressing the little ears with a small, flat blade screwdriver.

This is a great mod. oldblue1968chevy won't be replacing his headlight switch ever again and his night vision from the cab of his truck just improved.
All for about $15 in parts.

I am running a whole new headlight wiring setup with relay kits I got from O'Rielly's. I am using new plug connectors for the headlights. Also since this is on a vehicle that has the dimmer switch in the column I am using an on-off-on toggle switch mounted in the dash.

The whold process is a little tricky, but I am taking my time and everything seems to be working out ok.

This is practice for the relay set up I hope to do on one fo my project 67-72 trucks in the future, probably the '67.

Hey Guys, sorry to mention this, but I feel it is important. The whole idea is to get full voltage/amperage to the headlights, but the replacement sockets and the original ones, too, are 16ga! This is WAY to light to do the job we want to do. I used the original type
16ga from the switch to my relay bank as kickers, then I ran 12ga all the way from the relays to the the headlights! I took the sockets apart and replaced the 16ga pigtails with the 12ga runs. My relays are mounted on the passengers fender so the battery runs are really short at 18" and 4 1/2'. I have 14.2v or battery voltage at the lights!
I know it's fussy and takes more time, but it is worth it, especially if you run Halogen or HID lights, and it keeps the sockets from getting so hot!

I ran one wire to both relays. Never had a issue yet 4 years running. The relay cares all the load and then the head light switch has hardly anything on it. I guess running bigger wire to the lights is OK but I don't know if it's worth it unless you do go to HID's.

18ga doesn't belong on a motor vehicle unless it runs on 4 Double As! 16ga is as light as I go. I melted a headlight socket once so now I don't take any chances. If you agree with what I said and can use the information, great! If you disagree, also great! That's why I enjoy these forums.

I have a 16 guage wire going from alt to my (+) battery.

I don't think so, and neither did the factory. I believe you should make it 12ga and solder all the connections. Crimp-ons and Scotch Loks are just places for corrosion to start. Corrosion = voltage drop and resistance. Use heat shrink tubing on the joints and you almost can't go wrong! Good luck!
