Question All around tire questions

I'm having hell finding tire information and good prices and everything to do with tires.

I have a 72 gmc on an 83 suburban frame as some of you may have seen. The custom fabricated body lift on it is 6" and a 4" rough country suspension lift is going on too. Skyjacker's website lists that with an 8" suspension lift 38x12.5 r 15s fit. I'm going to have 10" of lift but 38s sound great to me. The truck is going to be mainly a weekend warrior. Probably mostly driven around town and such but I don't want to be scared of dropping off into a mudhole either because I'm not building a jacked up 4x4 to be cool. I wanna play in the mud. So I don't need boggers but I don't want an AT tire either.

So here are my primary questions:
  1. What tires that come in that size (or close and should fit) would you seasoned vets recommend?
  2. Where do you buy your tires; specifically if you buy online?

Basically I need a tire that isn't gonna break the bank (I may be dreaming but under $300 a tire?), wears half ass well, and does alright in the mud. I'm not gonna be in any mud comps or anything but there's a million places near where my family lives outside houston to take off into the woods or down a river bank and I wanna be reasonably confident with hitting the trails on the weekends that I'm home.

I know this is probably a recurring discussion but help me out if you can.

Thanks in advance,

Doyle

Re: All around tire questions

Since my tire needs are not the same as yours, I can't give a good answer to your first question. However, it does sound like any typical M/T mud tire would probably do the job for you.

I have bought online from http://www.tirerack.com/ and http://www.treadepot.com/ -- with good results from both. Better still, shop for a good price online, then take that info to your local dealer(s). Many will price match, and you'll be helping your local economy. Remember to add shipping, and also mount & balance, sales tax (if any), and any other miscellaneous costs to compare total out-the-door price.

Thanks for responding. I never thought about trying to get a price match but that is a good idea. I'd been to tirerack.com but not treadepot. I'll try it out. Anyone else's input will be greatly appreciated.

Re: All around tire questions

TX- Getting a good wearing tire that is also good in mud and relatively cheap is like the holy grail of tires. Going big isn't cheap. So you are going to have to shop it hard to get the best price. Most large tires are typically softer for better off road traction, which means they wear fast with lots of pavement driving.

Check buyer feedback on the online tire sales sites and really look at comments to see how they work and wear. Go with the one that you fell best meets your needs. Just don't expect them to be cheap.

On a side note, 6" of body lift? Holy huge body lifts.

Re: All around tire questions

I heard the Federal Couragia M/T lasts forever and is fairly quiet.

Lol ya. The truck is a frankenstein for sure. The PO welded the body to the frame on 6" sections of 4" pipe. Not exactly conventional but the son of a gun is on there. It probably wasn't the wisest purchase I've ever made but I tried to see the good: classic looks with more modern drive train and such. I have no problem admitting I got stars in my eyes when I saw it. I've wanted a classic 4x4 ever since I saw one as a little kid. Oh well, I'm too deep in it to quit now!

Re: All around tire questions

I think I may have settled on the super swamper m16 in a 37x13.50r15. Any opinions or experiences?

Re: All around tire questions

Here is a couple pics with all the lift. What does everyone think? Do the 35's look small or just right?

Re: All around tire questions

I think they would look right if it was a suspension lift, not a body lift.

Re: All around tire questions

For great wear and on and off road use, it's hard to beat BFG A/T's IMPO.

Huh? What about the current setup prevents it from looking right in your opinion? 4" of that lift is suspension lift.

I think its a great looking truck thats coming along as well as could be expected. I guess its a good thing its mine.
