72 Custom Deluxe

New pictures

Hey all new to the board here.. My name is nate and i'm from the Detroit area. This is my first chevy truck. I picked this up for a (from what i think) a very generous price. Needs a few things right away.. every thing else seems done. so very little to do right away.. but like all my vehicles i tend to get a little crazy.

I'm looking for a good steering wheel... preferably woodgrain.. and chevy.
Also i need to get the AC going and i believe i need an AC compressor.. The power steering is leaking a bit.. ( i hope thats p.s. fluid). Not sure how to go about fixing the window cranks.. i'll have to check that out.. some minor paint in the engine.. possibly some brakes, and thats it for now.. oh and a tonnoau cover.. anyone point me in the directioin to any of these that would be great...

in the future.. a drop, rims tires, ect, ect, ect, ..

i'm thinking of pinstriping the sides and rear and painting in the chevrolet on the tailgate.. what ya think.. like a chevy blue pinstripe and lettering.. any opinions i'm open .. thanks

nate

Re: 72 Custom Deluxe

Very nice truck!

The wood pieces are kinda cool. Someone put a lot of time into them...had never seen the dash pad out of wood like that.

Since you asked for opinions, I wouldn't do pinstripe. You already have the nice upper and lower moldings. I would get a tailgate band for the rear or paint the letters to match the color of the truck. But the band would really set off the back and dress it up!

On the window cranks...the regulators are probably going bad. Sometimes they just need grease but at this age....90% of the time they need replaced if they're having issues. Make sure to get 72 style regulators as that is the style door panel and of course year and they are different. same goes for the lock actuators if you ever replace those.

For the wheel check out ebay. They have some good deals on woodgrain steering wheels.

Re: 72 Custom Deluxe

Nice truck! I agree tailgate band would set it off nice, thinking about putting one on my Cheyenne. I assume you photo shopped the blue pinstripes in one of the pics. I think if you put the pinstripe on with the factory trim it would look a little "cluttered", just my opinion. Replace the window regulaters. I just put new ones in my 68 the other day, got them from Classic Parts, and they work great. Joseph

Re: 72 Custom Deluxe

The tailgate band is a piece of trim. Pretty sure all of the major parts vendors for our trucks carry them. The one in the link below is black, but I think they are also available in a woodgrain pattern if that's what you prefer.

Welcome aboard from Maryland. Very nice looking truck. I agree with the others, add the tailgate band and be set.

Re: 72 Custom Deluxe

sweet, goin with the band.. now black or wood hmmm? then fix the stripped window levers, power steering leak, tonnoeu cover, steering wheel and rearview mirror.. and that looks good for now.

possibly a slight tint on the windows ? perhaps?

The band should match the bottom molding. So if you have black bottom molding then you should have a black tailgate band.

Re: 72 Custom Deluxe

Nate, Welcome! You've got a nice truck! I believe they make a nice aftermarket woodgrain steering wheel with a Chevy bowtie center.(If you want to sell the old one please let me know). I like the tailgate band idea- not everyone does. Hope you enjoy working on it & driving it this summer.

You can find a rear view mirror in a lot of places, salvage yard, ebay, craigs list. Take it to a glass shop and they will glue it on for you for little or no charge. I don't know kind of glue they use, but it works. Every time I've tried to glue on a mirror is stays about two days.
