How to patina aluminum/pot metal in one day???
Okay.....let me explain. I recently got in one of the more rare Holley GM muscle car carburetors (If you must know, it's a list 3247 '66 CORVETTE 425hp 427 carb). The fact that the guy that listed it on ebay and had know idea what it was is irrelevant. The fact that I paid $45 SHIPPED is also irrelevant. The fact that it is worth hundreds of dollars in unrestored condition is further irrelevance!
Now that I am done boasting, here is the issue. The carb is 100% correct except it doesn't have the vented front bowl. It's only 2 more machining steps that Holley did to their stock center hung 4160/4160 bowls. I can buy them pretty cheap new but it will look very odd on a 45 year old carb. I drilled the 2 necessary holes and tapped the one, so that part is done. Now I have two super bright and shiny holes in a very old bowl and I need to figure out how to dull up the 2 holes so they look like old metal. What can I use to really dull up the shiny part the new holes made? Thanks! |

If they are brass try using white vinigar or muratic acid. I know it works on copper flashing and some raw sculpted brass. Good luck.

Sodium Carbonate + water should blacken aluminum real quick. Steel wool would shine it back up to what ever degree you want. You can find sodium carbonate at any pool supply store. It will be call PH UP or something like that.

Muratic Acid will blacken aluminum instantly, giving an aged look. Just did this to a set of Z/28 valve covers.

I am about to pull the bowls out of some nasty carb cleaner I had. I remembered that it did a good job of discoloring carb parts when I didn't want it too! lol
I didn't post any "pichers" because the parts have been in the cleaner. I don't have a solvent resistant underwater camera! |
