1968 Camper Special
Good Morning, I am needing some advice on finding out some of the history on my 68 Camper Special..
I have all of the paper work from when it was new, including the protect o plate, it was brought new in San Diego California, at City CHevrolet. Unfortunately the dealer doesnt have any records or paperwork on my truck. so I am wanting to find out what options the truck had on it from the factory. Unfortunately the sticker on the inside of t he glovebox is MIA. so I am wondering if GM would have any records of this? if so, how would I go about contacting them? Re: 1968 Camper Special
Do you have the build sheet? That is the only way you will find out the options it came with from the factory if the SPID (glovebox sticker) is missing. Look under/behind the seat in the springs for the build sheet. Also, it is a Custom Camper....not a Camper Special

Re: 1968 Camper Special
if you can't find the build sheet, then you are semi-out of luck. The protecto plate does have some codes telling what some of the equipment is... engine, trans, rear end and gear... maybe a little more too.
As for the rest of the options, you'll just have to wing it. |

Re: 1968 Camper Special
Post some pictures of your truck and we can give you an idea how original it is and how it was likely equipped.

Re: 1968 Camper Special
There are many '68 Custom Campers on this forum, with SPID decals, they probably can help. Try to find a similar equipped truck and deduct or add options that are visible. It appears to be a base model with paint code 507. Under hood photos and rear suspension photos will help out even more.

Re: 1968 Camper Special
Well, the protect o plate has the truck listed as having a 327 and a 3 speed automatic. then it says that the interior was blue and white. and the exterior was blue and white.
The 327 numbers match all over ( heads, block, intake,) and the turbo hydra matic is present. Around the windshield you can see where the blue paint has chipped off and it does reveal a white roof, and then in the bed where the paint has chipped away, you can see a darker blue paint. around the inner wheel lips of the fenders this is the story as well. Now I would like to see if anyone knows that if all custom campers came with a white grill area? or was that only standard on the two tone paint job? |

Re: 1968 Camper Special
A lot of 68's had the white gill face regardless of trim level or other options. It was independant of two tone paint scheme.
Some basic 68's had silver/grey grill face with painted inserts. We've pondered this over the years - why some basic 68's had white grill chrome trim on the hood lip/inserts and some had grey grill face . It's kind of one of those mysterys of life.

Re: 1968 Camper Special
P.S. Your truck looks to me like a base truck. I guess your truck should have plain painted metal door panels instead of the vinyl ones. The front bumper should be white along with the grill face. (Along with the cab roof.)
The three speed auto should be a TH400 I think if it's original. I forget what else the custom camper options includes in 68. I think anti-sway bar was included among other things. If I can dig out my documentation I'll check it out.

sway bar, HD springs or overload springs, HD tires.... I think that was about it. Maybe HD shocks too.

Re: 1968 Camper Special
I thought it was a lonely base model 68 as well, which would have not made me love it any less or more. However, when I peeled off some of the 80's chevy truck trim there are holes for the lower side molding, so I know she had side molding from the factory. she has the anti sway bar in front. she doesnt have air conditioning, which is fine with me, because i dont plan on driving it alot, just my crazy, weekend morning cruiser.
She does have the Turbo Hydra Matic transmission which makes her a super easy truck to drive. Northerngmc, your truck is actually the first truck I saw when I searched for the 68 chevy truck when I first got to the website. knowing what yours looks like and being that I have the same exact model, I am in love. The other thing I wanted to know if there was a bed kit for the 68 custom camper available? cause when I have my truck stripped and painted the factory colors, a nice wood bed would be awesome! |

Re: 1968 Camper Special
and she has white paint on the front bumper underneath the blue paint. so that to me indicates the presence of the white bumpers, which could further prove that it was an base model?

Thanks, it is a blast to drive. It is in the shop today getting the A/C back working. They are installing a new compressor, drier, POA valve and charging it with 134A.

Re: 1968 Camper Special
I agree, these old trucks are a blast to drive and for short drives around town, it beats fuel injection. LOL.
Did a little work on the truck last night. going to change out the fuilds and take it through emissions tomorrow. |

Re: 1968 Camper Special
Rear sport bumpers are reproduced and probably more have been reproduced by the aftermarket than GM made!
A/C fixed today!
