3spd O/D question
Can a Borg Warner o/d unit from a '62 F*rd F100 be transplanted to a '65 Chevy truck 3spd? I can get the whole truck for a song and dance, so I figured I'd ask before I do the deal. Thanks all for your help in advance.

Re: 3spd O/D question
I have a chevy 3speed with OD but I dont know if it will bolt up to a ford transmission. (I would think it would be different)
maybe search on H.A.M.B or ask those guys. I know they talk alot about these OD units. I'm not a member on there just did some searching on it long ago

Re: 3spd O/D question
Borg-Warner made the GM version as well-if the front bearing retainer(bellhousing hole) is the same diameter, it will work fine.

Re: 3spd O/D question
it can be done, the reason i know this is because i put a 283 in a '65 ford f100 & bolted it to the t98 that was in the truck. to start with the bearing retainer must be turned down to fit the cast iron bell housing with the open bottom you will be using. it must also be shortened to chevy length & reduced in diameter so the chevy release bearing will fit. simple lathe work. use four socket head cap screws to retain it. check the end of input shaft size against the chevy, you may need to re-bore a new pilot bearing. use a clutch cover that fits the chevy flywheel & a ford disc that is the same diameter as the cover. the top two holes in the ford case will need to be elongated towards each other until the bolts will thread into the bell housing. the bottom two holes will miss the bell housing completely. using the holes that the dust shield used to bolt to, bolt a piece of 1/4" thick flat bar to the bottom of the bell housing. now cut another piece & drill holes for the trans ears & bolt it to the trans. now weld these two together. then fab a couple of gussets & weld them in. you will try to use a piece of angle instead of welding flat bar together but it won't work because the dust cover flange is not 90 deg to the trans mounting face unless you mill it so. i did this when i was just married & funds were non existent & i read an article in a hot rod mag about putting a ford top loader 4 spd in a '55 chevy so i reversed engineered the article & came up with this. or you could just go get a dual pattern scatter-shield & save a lot of work. but if you can afford the scatter-shield then you could also afford that shiny new tremec 5 spd trans!

Re: 3spd O/D question
Thanks guys. Actually, I was asking if the O/D unit itself could be swapped from the F*rd trans to the Chevy trans. I know it would be a lot of work even if it is possible.

Re: 3spd O/D question
BTT for the morning crowd. Still curious about this. Would I be better off looking for a Chevy unit? T5 is an option, but I've always kinda enjoyed column shift and feel it would retain the "flavor" of my truck.
Thanks everyone again for your input. Posted via Mobile Device

Re: 3spd O/D question
Like alot of guys on this board, Since a little kid I was always either playing in or going somewhere in the 66 with my Dad. I always remember my dad shifting the 3 speed on the tree; and wondered what the heck is he doing? haha
So that one reason I kept it somewhat close to original. just want the OD for highway use. I mean the 3 speed on the column you dont see anymore. I would look for a chevy unit if it was me. BTW here is a site with junkyards around the country. There are some OD units on here www.car-part.com

Re: 3spd O/D question
Well I found out that the F*rd unit is different, so I"ll be getting rid of it. Still gonna look for a Chevy unit, but I did learn some things about the o/d units so it wasn't a bad thing.

Re: 3spd O/D question
aero, thanks for the links. Can't imagine what shipping would be for one. If I can find one "local" I'd rather that.

Re: 3spd O/D question
Soo these 3spd overdrives would bolt right up and use the original column shift linkages? I have all the parts to bolt up the original 3spd up to the 5.3 I am putting in my 67, but I have started to hesitate, as the wife reallly want's to to take the 67 on Route66 after it is finished and I wouldn't mind doing the hot rod power tour one day, and not having overdrive would be no fun for those.

If I was, I'd swap you a '55 Pontiac Hydra-Matic for one. LOL!

Re: 3spd O/D question
Folks:
If you decide to ship one of these, make sure the sender removes the governor and solenoid from the transmission before shipping and pack them separately. They stick out from either side of the tranny and are easy to break and impossible to find. Also, UPS is likely to deny the insurance coverage if they get broken. Ask me how I know? Re: 3spd O/D question
Ray:
$150. The seller tried to crate the tranny, but UPS refused it as being too heavy. He resorted to boxing it, but UPS said for the insurance that I paid for to kick in, there had to be 2" of packing on all sides, which he didn't know and didn't do. That insurance is a real racket. Regards, Steve New Orleans PS Overcame the setback and love these trannies. I have the later model with seven bolt side cover and synchro'ed first. It is a great addition behind my 305 GMC v6. |

Re: 3spd O/D question
Steve, that really blows! Maybe he should've left it in the crate and shipped it fedex freight. I'm glad you didn't let that turn you off and go with a different trans. I'm more than likely gonna hold out for one to come up local. I'd rather not ship if I don't have to. I have my F*rd unit on CL right now, but haven't got any hits yet.
PS. If i can find the 7 bolt trans, I'll be on it like white on rice...
