1979 c10?

i just bought a 79 c10. its actually a 4wd dually stepside c10. everything you can want in a c10 right? ha welt, im not too much into trucks but if i was ever to buy one it would be this body style. the dually and 4wd was a plus. now im not big into trucks, i was actually looking for a el camino for 2 years before coming across this deal. i hope you see where im going by talking about the elco. i would like to lower this truck, at least 2'' front and 4 rear. least then i wont have to get ***** steps for my girl. ill post pictures soon and all but i was just wondering for the time being. thank you

Re: 1979 c10?

4x4 you say? Stepside dually you say? So that'd be a K30 at least, not a C10. Pics please.

Is a PITA to lower a 4x4 really, unless you're planning on making it a 2 wheel drive.

Re: 1979 c10?

that is wicked cool! I certainly wouldn't lower it, I'd lift it before I did anything. You're just going to give up clearance and suspension travel if you start trying to drop it. I'd like to see it with dually hubs and matching wheels in the front, that's be sweet.

I'd say either get the ***** steps or get a more athletic girlfriend.

Re: 1979 c10?

And as noted above, a C10 designates a 2wd half ton. your truck was a half ton at one time because it's a shortbed (or it was cut down but I doubt it). Probably was a K10, and someone jsut swapped 8 lug axles under it for beef, and because they had one or just for the heck of it slipped the dual rear wheel rearend under it. Doesn't look like a dually pickup axle, not wide enough, so probably a cab & chassis Corporate 14 bolt like mine.

Re: 1979 c10?

That looks like a bad a$$ truck. Could you post up more info on it?

The cheapest and easiest way to make getting in to that truck easier is by installing steps. Lowering a 4x4 can be done, but IMO that kinda defeats the purpose of having a 4x4. My friend has an 85 4x4 burb that was lowered but he quickly changed that...he told me the the PO of his burb was really short. Anyways, I just installed a pair of the Smittybuilt tube steps for my 85 diesel burb and my girls like them a lot better then the other type of step avaiable. I lucked out and found my steps in a local junkyard.

Re: 1979 c10?

im at work right now so no pictures ATM. but, as far as what the truck was, i picked it up on the lift the day after i bought it and noticed something i didnt see before i bought it... the fram has been cut and welded. so our theory here at the shop was that someone might have taken a 1 ton rear frame and welded her to a c10 front. then installed a front diff assembly and such. its got a dana 44 front, and a 14 bolt rear. havent goten to take the wheels off yet to see what the deal is with the dually. im assuming its not a real dually obviously. kid i bought it off of said its a 68 camaro 350 but im very doubtful on that. still havent coded the numbers off it yet. it is a 4 speed with creeper though. ill post some more info later and much pictures.

Re: 1979 c10?

sorry didnt get a pic of the cut. im pulling the motor ATM. she was tired when i first got it but today on the way home from work she started geting a knock. soooo im debating if i want to get a 350 vortec and drop it in, or if i want to take my 305ho and put it in. im leaning towards the 305 because of the electric fuel pump i would need to get with the 350, i dont feel like seting that up. hope yall enjoy. MIND YOU THE AC WAS TAKEN OFF RIGHT BEFORE PICTURES haha

Re: 1979 c10?

i feel as though lifting it is not practical, it serves no purpose but the look and off roading. neither of which im worried about. i dont want to slam it like the mexis out in cali. i just want it to be practical that if i so choose to change my gears around, i wont die when i go around a turn at 50 ha

I don't think it would be turn any better. old 4x4s with straight axles just don't really handle well.

Exactly. To make this a 1970's 4x4 dually handle well is quite a task. You're going to have to lower it a ridiculous amount to get a noticeable effect. I'd leave it the way it is, personally. Or sell it and buy a stock truck.
