Fuel Filling Issue: Auto Shut-Off At Pump?

I have an under bed tank installed. Fills fine, not slow and the vent set-up seems to be doing its job. The problem I'm having is that when the fuel travels up the filler neck (it's about 2' long and vertical) when full, instead of shutting the pump off like on a normal car, the fuel shoots out of the filler... even when trying to fill slowly. At that point the pumps will shut off but it's obviously a little late.
Any thoughts?

Yep, happens every time I fill up if I allow it to cut off by itself. Makes getting a full tank very difficult.

Curious as to how you have the tank vented. Is it possible to have it vented too well to cause this? Usually everyone complains about them shutting down making them too hard to top off.

I was curious about the same thing. If you look at my project thread (sig) there is a pic of the tank I used. The venting is via a 1/2 line that runs up to just before the filler which is mounted on top of my driver side fender.
I filled up yesterday with the same outcome, fuel shooting out once the tank is full and the fuel travels up to the filler opening. I'm guessing it's just the fact that the opening is so large. In other words, it doesn't have the nozzle restricter in it that would be in the factory filler of an OEM set-up.

turn the gas nozzel upside down when filling, this will cure that problem.

I had one more find a newer tank cut the end off so when you use the gas nossle will fit it and sli8de in and all you have left is a little peep hole for a vent or cut it a little further down and use the over flow hose to go back to the tank

are you using a fuel filler neck with the vent tube plumbed into it? I think just having the vent tube is not enough.

I haven't looked at your build thread but I think I know how to prevent the back splash of fuel. Get a gas cap that has the trap door that you don't remove the cap that you fuel through the cap. They can be purchased at different places I think I got mine on EBay. You won't get splashed with that type of cap. If you don't want to run that cap all the time just swap it out with the one you have and use it only when your topping off. Let me know if you try this and it works it might be the answer for others with the same problem. I have that cap on my step bed it never burps fuel out of it. But it is a pain to syphon gas out of but with fuel prices being what they are that's a good thing. Good Luck.

I looked at the name on my cap but can't read the first word on it. ........ Street Rods manufactured with patents in the USA. Mine came in a kit with a door, neck assy and cap. Sammy, that actually looks like a great idea. While finding one that would fit my filler might not happen since it's aftermarket, making my own would be easy. I think I will give it a shot and see what happens.
