Smile under cab

Does anyone know what finish was originally used under the cab on a 1967 C10? Was it painted the color of the truck, painted black, or treated with rust proofing?

Thanks for your help

Re: under cab

Mine had an undercoating applied. No idea what the original color was. It was dirt and rust colored when I removed it...

Re: under cab

All the ones I've seen were red oxide primer, with a little bit of undercoating sprayed on the sides.

Re: under cab

Hmm, I would have thought semi gloss black but maybe that's wrong. I will be doing my wrecker floor soon and might have to change plans now.

I cleaned up the bolt in floor hump today and it had undercoat on it. When I scraped that off, I could find no black but do see some red primer.

I wonder why they didn't paint them? Chevy cars stopped having primer floors about 1962 on the full size.

Thanks again for all the replys.

I wonder if one of the board members are anyone else has documentation on this subject? I am only going to do this once and would like to get it as close to original as I could.

Any knowledge about the under cab finish on a 1967 C10 is greatly appriciated.

Do we have a vender I can purchase the correct under the cab rubber mounts and hardware from?

Re: under cab

Wes, at Classic Heartbeat......nice guy.

As for the correctness of the under-body sheet metal color, I guess that it is inevitable that these trucks may be entered in some kind of concours competition, sometime in the future. Kind of hard to think in that vein, but anything is possible. I mean, whodathunk that some of the vehicles that are judged to be classics, or milestone vehicles, would have attained that status in the collector vehicle world? I know these trucks have been deemed to be an icon, like the 53-56 Fords, or the Tri-5 Chevies, but far be it for me to ever have my truck in competition in that venue. My interests lie in the hot rod style of vehicle.....big and littles, etc. If I choose to undercoat my cab floor bottom, or use something like LizardSkin to insulate it before painting it, would I be remiss in the competition? My plan is to document the construction so that any questions posed in the future would be answered by the pix.

I guess I fail to see that having an unpainted, or spotily-primed bottom side of the floorpan would be a plus.

Re: under cab

Here's a link to an old thread that was posted last year -- someone found an original 70 survivor with only 80 miles on it -- they hoisted it up and took video of the underside. There's a couple of Youtube videos on this thread, and you can see that the underside of the cab is red as described in an earlier post here.

Not Mine ....79.6 miles on a 70 chevy pu

Thumbs up Re: under cab

WOW! Thanks for posting that. It's amazing what some people find. I hope that truck found it's way into a museum or time capsule! It would be a sin to start accumulating miles on it, something I couldn't do!

That confirms it for me, red oxide it is for the floor pan on my wrecker.

I was a bit surprised to see the original oil filter on that truck but a bit concerned when the guy said it's original because there's not enough mileage to change it. Oil should be changed not only for the mileage but the time it's in there, that's why they say 3,000 or 6 months as an example. I'm guessing the 40 year old oil is still in it too?

Re: under cab

I'm all for painting the bottom of my cab in red oxide but I have a 4 speed so that too needs red oxide. That's not going to look too good IMO. We're the floor and trans two different shades at least? If not, it's going to look like I forgot to paint something...

Smile Re: under cab

To the board and all members,

I want to extend my appriciation to all of the members and the board of this website. I have been restoring my 67 C10 and coming to this website receiving help and answers for years. I am in my mid fifties and for the first time in my life realizing my dream of restoring the truck I love so much. The 67 C10 was the truck my father drove when I was just a boy. I would hold a flashlight for hours for my father while he worked on the family truck. I am a restorer, and a lover of our trucks just as so many of the members of this website are. I cannot thank you all enough for helping me to realize my life long dream!

To dfwright,

Thank you for posting the video, it has answered many of the questions I had. I have saved the video and will refer back to it in the years to come. Thank you sir!

To chevLoRay,

I am restoring my truck for my own joy. I hope to never be finished working on it. I drive it most every day that I don't have part of it taken apart. Yes, my wife and I do go to cars shows with it, not to win, but because it is a part of our family. Thank you sir for the vender's name on those under cab bushings.
