Windshield washer on 'roids

When I bought my truck, the washers weren't working so I bought and installed an $8 seal kit. They worked, but I had forgotten how bad a design the factory setup was. I discovered that a couple of the members on the site had upgraded to newer gm designs, so I thought I'd try it too. I went to the junk yard and picked up a tank and integral pump from an early '90's Chevy truck. They're rectangular in shape, hold close to gallon of fluid and have enough power to shoot the washer fluid over the top of the cab. and it was $3 cheaper than the seal kit. I would highly recommend that before you replace the stock washer pump or seals that you look at a newer pump and tank instead. Easy install and works 20x better than stock. It's nice when a cheap mod works so well.

Take some pics of your install and put a brief discription with it and this could go in Longhornman's "Cheap modifications" thread.

I did the same mod to mine the other day. Remember to take the plug that goes to the pump with a length of wire to splice into your wiring.

Re: Windshield washer on 'roids

Here's the pics. As stated before, I picked up a tank and pump from an early '90 Chev truck at the wreckers for $5. These hold close to a full jug of fluid which is a big improvement over the stock tank. They have a 3 bolt mount so I added a bracket down below for the 3rd bolt hole. I couldn't place all the mounting points on the tank flush against the fender and it did not feel secure when it was full without some support on the bottom part. It's wired it into the original plug and switch, the one that plugs into the front of the wiper motor assembly. There is only two wires so you have a 50\50 chance of getting it right the first time and I did. Next, you need to add a cheap vacuum line tee for the hoses and it's done. Keep an eye out for clearance for the hood hinge and top of the hood when it is closed. The improvement is infinitely better. As others who have done this stated, you must re aim your washer nozzles or else they shoot over the cab into the box. Enjoy
