Inside Rear View Mirrors

Was an interior rear view mirrors standard equipment in 61? In the parts box I found a black mirror with a ball end for mounting, but no mounting arm. On the cab there aren't any signs of where it was mounted and I can't remember for sure where it goes.

Re: Inside Rear View Mirrors

My 62 never had an inside mirror before I got it. They were positioned in the center of the cab, screwed into the ceiling a few inches from the windshield.

Re: Inside Rear View Mirrors

I bought the replacement mirror bracket and day/nite mirror but when I went to mount it there weren't any holes from the orig mirror. The PO bought it to put a camper on it so maybe he didn't want / need one.

Re: Inside Rear View Mirrors

I went home for lunch a took a look at the placement, and it seems my memory was a little off. More accurately, the bracket (factory 62) goes about as close to the windshield as possible with the forward edge of the casting just short of where the metal begins to roll in. Hope this helps.

Re: Inside Rear View Mirrors

Although almost every truck got one, it appears an interior mirror was an optional accessory. My 1960 GMC was delivered new without a mirror installed. There were no holes in the cab for the bracket until I drilled them.

To further reinforce the theory they were optional, here is the 1960 accessory installation sheet from GM:

Re: Inside Rear View Mirrors

This is a great help. I don't know what the mirror in the spare parts box was used for, but I have chrome mount and a stainless day / night mirror. I'll install them this weekend.

Talking Re: Inside Rear View Mirrors

1968 - Rear-view Mirrors become required by law.
As of January 1, 1968, the Federal Government required all cars, trucks, buses, etc. to be equipped with rear-view mirrors.
The fellas who's trucks didn't come with one had to hang their head out to merge in traffic.

Re: Inside Rear View Mirrors

I bought my '63 GMC in June of '92 and it didn't have one. Didn't even have the holes there. I had to find an old mirror in a wrecking yard and drilled and installed it in my cab.

Re: Inside Rear View Mirrors

The PO ordered things like door locks on both doors, and retac side mirrors but no interior mirror. It's amazing how you could special order (or not) just about anything on a car or truck back then. Now you have to get everything in packages and things you don't want you have to take (and pay for) anyway.

Re: Inside Rear View Mirrors

This is the mirror that came in my '60. It doesn't look like any of the ones I have found on here. Anyone have any ideas on where it came from? I can't find any other mount holes. The stock ones I have looked at appear to have 3 mounting holes.

Re: Inside Rear View Mirrors

Gotta 60 C-10 that does not have one, no holes either. No pass side sun visor holes, but there is a dimple for the large center hole. I will be installing both the rear view and the visor, as one visor looks goofy, and I'm running peep mirrors on the outside. Anyone that's run these knows there worthless to see out of, but cool to look at! Plus, gotta have somewhere to hang fuzzy dice!

Re: Inside Rear View Mirrors

That’s a different looking bracket than what I’ve seen. Maybe it’s aftermarket. The mirror though (no bracket) looks like the one that came in the box of spares that was in my truck came with.

My 64 short stepper did not have a rearview in the cab and did not have a passenger door mirror either.

Re: Inside Rear View Mirrors

Post # 16 looks like a advanced design truck mirror. Or a modified one, with an aftermarket mount?

Surf Daddy, I'm assuming original owner figured he'd be using the truck with the camper on the back full time, so an interior rearview mirror would be useless. That's probably why he sprung for optional exterior mirrors instead.

When I got my 62 the mirror was about 6 inches closer to the drivers side and crocked.

Re: Inside Rear View Mirrors

My 64 has a factory rear view mirror and both outside mirrors. My 65 has no rear veiw mirror and both outside door mirrors. But my 63 c20 has no rearview mirror and only one outside mirror on the driver side. Ive got a factory chrome rearview for it tho. Found it in a box full of vw bug parts I bought a few years ago, lol.

Yeah, I'm thinking these are dealer installed possibly.
