Re: Let's see pics of paintjobs done yourself...
Well I'm a rookie too! First I would not suggest black for your first painting experiment. It takes a little more patience. I sanded on the body and primer every weekend for 3 months, and wet sanded the primer with 800 grit before paint. 2 coats of color and 3 coats of clear. I would've done one more coat of clear if I hadn't ran out. And if you get some orange peel or a couple runs, don't sweat it cause you'll want to wet sand with 1500 grit and finally 2000 grit to get it perfect. Then a bunch of buffing and polishing to bring back the shine!

Re: Let's see pics of paintjobs done yourself...
Truck is a 10 footer but it was meant to be a quickie to look good until I got a house with a garage, I did it all in my uncle's driveway (check out build thread)... but then this other project showed up one day....

Re: Let's see pics of paintjobs done yourself...
I'm going to attempt my first "paint" job. However it is going to be on my '03 suburban. It got hit with hail damage, so rather than pay someone to do it, I'm going to use the insurance money to buy an air compressor, and other supplies to do it myself. It needed a new hood anyways (no kidding: a buffalo used it as a scratching post at a drive through animal zoo).

Re: Let's see pics of paintjobs done yourself...
I would also be curious if you guys built a "booth" in your garage or anything like that. I read a recent article, Hot Rod or Car Craft I think, about a guy in CA that paints show winning cars in his garage with no forced air setup, no filters, nothing. Just crack open his garage door and another door and goes to it. Said he waters down the floor, sprays out the garage and lets it sit over night. Then in the morning does a wipe down and sprays.

Re: Let's see pics of paintjobs done yourself...
This was my first paint job. Its a 20 footer. I had problems with the fisheyes when I painted the bed. Its dupont single stage, Peterbuilt Red.
Its hard work and frustrating at times. Practice makes perfect.

Re: Let's see pics of paintjobs done yourself...
I covered floor and walls with a really thin painters plastic. It builds a static charge and all airborn dust and overspray clings to it. Then I took my back door off the hinges and stapled up some foam filter material. Next, I had a box fan that I rested my garage door on so air would flow front to back across the truck. I also put a filter on the front of the fan so I didn't blow black overspray all over the driveway.
