cant get truck started

i had a suspended license all of the 2010 year.. so my truck sat but was started every now and then... about october i went out and took bed apart to swap the bed floor got all that done now i cant seem to get it started.. i thought timing was off so i set it back to TDC and restabbed distributor... had a few backfires so i rebuilt my carb.. now i think its getting to much fuel because when i go to start it it takes forever to start.. once it gets started it runs fine just if you shut it off it takes like 5 minutes of cranking to get it going again.. what shall i do?

Re: cant get truck started

If it's flooding you should see dark gray to blackish smoke coming out of the exhaust when you first start it. If it's not getting enough gas, then a quick shot of fresh gas in the carb will let you know.

If it's the gas that's old and maybe has water in it and you want to make absolutely sure, remove the rubber hose from the fuel tank at the fuel pump. Install a 2-3 foot section of same size fuel hose and insert the other end in a one gallon container of fresh gas.

The pump will start suctioning the gas after a few seconds and it should then start without any problems. If you still have problems, it could be a carb problem.
