Re: help with tranny crossmeber clutch swap

In my 68 GMC with 250 six and 3 speed saginaw I didn't have to mess with the crossmember. I have plenty of room to remove the transmission behind the engine.

forgot to add: I'll post a pic of mine from underneath for comparison.

Re: help with tranny crossmeber clutch swap

Here's the pic of mine. Unbolt it all the way around including the engine mounts and slide it backwards.

IIRC the problem I encountered was the parking brake cable. It may be better if you remove it so it's not in the way. Also, use a small hydraulic jack and block of wood to hold the engine up and/or lowering it if you need to.

As you can see I just had to replace rear trans seal and speedometer bullet o ring for leaking...lol

You can also drill out the rivets if you find that you need to remove that cross member. That's what I did, and just bolt it back in place.

Re: help with tranny crossmeber clutch swap

I assume that you're referring to the 4 speed granny gear transmission... which weighs a TON!

If possible just unbolt it from the bellhousing and move it back enough for the input shaft to clear the clutch.
Depending on the size clutch you should be able to remove and replace it from the bottom of the bellhousing.
