Transmission crossmember interchangibility

What year transmission crossmembers are interchangable? I threw my old one from my 82' out because of the PO's hack job and picked up one from 87' dually burb (off of his 90' Burb).

Tried to put in in tonight and it's not even close to fitting. Any ideas??? Am I going to have to drill some new holes to install the one I got from Chris or get one from another 81'-82'? Can not put the motor and Muncie in with out one. I knew I should have kept that old crossmember!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here is a pic of where the part that mounts to the underside of the top of the frame is mounted. Is this the correct position for a TH350 or a Saginaw 3 spd? What I pulled out of there was a Olds TH200 and the PO had to notch the crossmember for the tranny pan to clear.

Re: Transmission crossmember interchangibility

I didn't know there was a x-member change, but would think that any 2wd would work or be close enough to modify??

Re: Transmission crossmember interchangibility

Early ones without a cat leave the most room for dual exhuast. Im using one from a 3/4 ton. It requires some fab work for a 1/2 ton though.

Re: Transmission crossmember interchangibility

This what my 76 blazer has. I pulled an identical one out of a 80 3/4 with a turbo 350/205. Did the crossmembers change when they went to aluminum transfer cases?

Re: Transmission crossmember interchangibility

Just dump the ugly factory crossmember & build your own (or have it built) like on my truck. It'll be better all the way around!

Re: Transmission crossmember interchangibility

Another shot. The holes to mount it to the bottom of the frame are about 1" shy of making it........ I guess I will be going to the pick and pull because this 90' Burb cross member will not work

Re: Transmission crossmember interchangibility

Finally wrestled it in last night. Still need to do one bolt on the bottom of the driver's side of the frame and the two on the bottom of the passenger side. had to break out the 2 ton floor jack to make it happen. Might need to break out the 5 pound hammer to get it snug............
