How do I identify which 454 vortec I have?
Hey guys....question for ya.....How do you I dentify which version of the vortec 454 I have. Are there numbers on the block that I can use to identify it? I'm only asking because I'm told some of the blocks had the forged pistons. But I don't remember the year of the truck the engine came out of....any help on this to identfy this would be great. I know the vortecs have 4 years to pick from....96-99... but within those years if you don't have any info on the original truck, I need some other way to identify it. THX ALL!!!

Re: How do I identify which 454 vortec I have?
I'm no expert but unless you had a GEN VI boat motor or crate motor you likely have cast or hyperuetectic (cast) pistons. Though some one could have bought a ZZ short block and replaced it.
The GEN 6 is limited by those heads. Most of the stock pistons barely got you to 9:1 or a little more with the smaller vortec chamber. i had a 97 and wish I kept it. Nice idle. Grab one you can build a forged piston one if you want or 496 even. They have 1 piece rear seal cranks with 4.25 stroke. With a stock but tuned ecu turn off the torque management and it is a huge difference. Grab a pair of 320 rect port or 290 ovals for some great gains esp if you go aluminum. They make cams for the motor or get a take out of a ZZ502 upgrade your springs and run. Not significant difference in castings unless you got a 502. FYI Gen 6 motors I have read can only take a .030 or .060 over bore. A Mark IV can go .100 over most easy, some .125. About an y Mark 4 piston will fit all 454s same with rods. |
