Re: Sand hillclimbing

This is something I want to get in to at some point. Pismo is in my backyard and the sand drags would be fun.

Re: Sand hillclimbing

The sand is soooo damn addictive. I went to Glamas last February with some friends. First time I'd been to the sand. Within 45 days I came across this tucked away in a nasty little divorce.

Needed some TLC and a complete rewire,, but the wife is addicted. Had to get her something to haul the grandkids around the dunes in. (yeah right,, this was for the wife,, you believe me don't you!!)

Re: Sand hillclimbing

Looks like a 5.3 LS motor in that rail. That is more like what I want to build but with something like my truck motor with a turbo

Re: Sand hillclimbing

Started life as a 2001 LS1, (actually the 12651168 casting was used for LS1 / LS6) before the 4" stroke was added :-) I'm looking at a set of (doh, said Dart but the AFR's are where I'm looking for the 76cc chambers) LS heads to bring the compression back down. Motor was built by my machinist and the (then) owner kept the stock 853 heads on it and that intake. Compression is up at 11.6 with the pistons he used. I want to get it back down into the low 10:1 range. I mean,, how much power do you really need in a 1400 pound sand rail!!!

Re: Sand hillclimbing

Marv,

What made me think 5.3/6.0 is the fuel rail and accessories...

I have a set of AFR 225 large chambers (72cc) on my truck that I want to swap for small chamber AFR 225's or 230's. They are brand new (minus the little bit of mileage on my new 418). They have the light weight valves in them (which I would love to keep). I'm at 11.14cr with a 4" stroke and 4cc valve reliefs which is very pump gas friendly.

If you can find a set of AFR 225's or 230's with a small combustion chamber in perfect shape, well.......

Re: Sand hillclimbing

Shaun I'm probably going to run the thing as is this coming season and make the decision on which way to jump with the motor after the February MLK gig at Glamas next year. So if your still in build mode that far out,, we'll talk.

Re: Sand hillclimbing

What cam is in it? Curious to know where it runs out of steam. The stroke it has with a stock head (assuming it is not ported) is going to really play havoc on rpm. Vizard really talks about that in his camshaft book. I know this isn't your first rodeo and I think I am probably preaching to the choir but curiouslity makes me ask. You know we could figure out a nice little pump gas drinking combo that would really have that rail flying. Hyd cam? What rpm do you want to shift at? Truck intake LS6, Fast or single plain? Got some specs on those headers?

Re: Sand hillclimbing

Actually I have very limited info on the motor other than notes from my machinist file when he freshened it in early 2010. We know it's Eagle crank and rods, JE pistons but no number or valve relief cc. All he did was a hone, rings, bearings, valve job and modified something for oil pump. The cam is unknown, but it's definately not stock,, but doesn't sound like it's more than 220°ish @ 0.050,, pretty mild. My guess is it's a 1/2 decent short block, but the stock 853 heads and whatever junk intake / injectors / accessories they could find in a junk yard are severely limiting things. I heard the motor run, have fired it numerous times here in my shop, but has not moved under it's own power since the machinist freshened the thing. (been a 2 year NASTY divorce)
I was told there was a high rpm miss,, owner said it was electrical problem. VERY possible. Wireing was a frickin JOKE. I totally rewired the thing but I would not be a bit surprised if hi rpm issue is the top end they stuffed on it and injectors not capable of supplying enough fuel?? who knows. I'm sure I'm going to get a good education on the LS motors before I am comfortable with this thing.

It's a Mendeola 2D gearbox so 400-450HP is enough to rip that apart. Again I'm right back to don't need a heck of a lot
