Angry Broken door handle

Well, yesterday went to Farm & Fleet to pick up a pool for my 6 month old black lab and the drivers door on my '95 K1500 would not open, considering I didn't have the air on and it was 90+ out I was pretty hot and did not want to deal with this mishap.

Tore it apart to day to find I broke the handle. Anyone else have this problem? and is there any other way to fix it besides buy a new unit, little strapped for cash right now?

Re: Broken door handle

pretty common for the 95+ handles. a replacement is the only way i know. i had to replace mine years ago on my 97 and my brother in law replaced his last year on his 99 burb.

Re: Broken door handle

At least I'm not the only one . Guess I will be ordering the parts tonight, doing both sides so I don't have to deal with it again for a good while.

Re: Broken door handle

I've seen them in the Help! parts sections of auto stores. Yep, just that cast part. On the other hand, I bought a new ass'y from my GMC store. Not hard to install, but there is a rivet that you have to drill out, if yours has never been changed.

Re: Broken door handle

I've broke both sides off of my 97, and I got to replace the pass. side this weekend on my 96. those parts are junk. fortunately my local parts store carries the whole assembly for 20 bucks.

Re: Broken door handle

Just ordered both sides. 31 bucks a piece shipped to my door. Closest auto store is 25 miles away and gas isn't cheap so i thought 5 bucks shipping and a few days wait was a good deal. Never took a door panel off a Chevy truck before but actually was very easy . Not worried about the rivet(s) my dad has all the tools in his truck that I can use.

Do you use another rivet or just get a small bolt that will fit the hole and not hit the window?

They are junk parts, everything else works but the most used one. Do not understand that part .

Re: Broken door handle

I have had to do a few on my '95 as well thank god they are cheap. I would get rivets cause that's what they are designed for. Auto parts store should carry some that will work that's where I got mine at.

Re: Broken door handle

Well the last two I replaced, I used screws, but this time I'm going to use another rivet, since I personally have a hard time getting my hands behind the thing to screw the nut in place

Re: Broken door handle

FWIW...I had forgotten my good riveter and rivets one day, so the bride said I should just stop at O'Reilly's and see if they had one. They did...Chinese-made and only $10. Okay. Got to the sons' house and we did the job we needed to do and only needed to do 2 rivets....2. Did the first one. Loaded it with the 2nd one and squeezed the handle. The riveter broke. Took it apart to get the broken/bent rivet out. Put it back together. Same thing again. Put it all back in the package and back to the parts store for a refund.

Went to the house and got my good riveter...American made and the rivets, too. Job was finished and life is good.

I know some of you guys like to shop at that store that sells all the Chinese tools, and I've been there, too. But, I hate it when tools break. Never had one to break when it didn't have consequences....

I know how that goes, I work in the construction field (not now since I have no work) and everyone I worked with that knew what they were doing always bought good quality American tools. Junk tools only break when you need them the most. Always buy quality saves time and money in the end. Have a good riveter but not to sure about the rivets should get the job done.

well, mostly everything in my toolbox says Craftsman on it, but be careful even when it's a brand you know (I've always been fond of Craftsman tools) since I bought a set of Craftsman Vise Grips ( or Craftsman locking pliers for those who really like to get technical) and didn't notice till I got them home that they say "Made in China" right there on the side.

Yea all we have for wrenches and such are Craftsman all made in America, they are 10 or 15 years old i think, I have noticed more and more things are made in China but the big name brands are not to bad, that i have used. Wish more things were made here in the United States.

Re: Broken door handle

My dad worked for Massey-Ferguson years ago and he told me a story of how Sears wanted them to build their mowers at a cheap price/quality. Massey wouldn't do it and I have leary of them ever since.
