Found a '58 with a 230!
Problem: 230 motor mount system for my '59 apache
Hi! I still am working on this dilema in the back of mind as I have to do something in the near future! I found this '58 Chevy with a 230 motor, and the support of it looks almost factory. I posted this on SB site as I'm a little desperate to get this motor sitting squarely in somehow. Doesn't the 235 have the distributor in the middle of the block? The 230/250 is more upfront.

Yes that is the newer style inline 6 cylinder engine. It has been too many years since I have been around them. What is up front for bolt pads on it? If it was me I would try to use the the proper mount points that the 235 used or the V8. The bellhousing that worked with the V8 will work with that newer style 6. I remember them as 250 and 292 engines. Maybe the first was a 230 don't remember.

235 vs. 230. 235 has dist in middle, 230 at from. Valve cover is different too. late engines kept the front mount bosses for mounting accessory brackets.

That's a good question Skip!
When I bought this truck, the motor hadn't been started for about 2-3 years. I found it to be a challege to get it running. It had some debris in the combustion chambers 1-4, so I pulled the head, then the pistons to make sure all was ok, replaced the connecting rod bearings at my engine builders recommedation. Got it started, messed with the carb over and over and now it runs great! Cold natured as heck, but runs! If it works don't fix it! I'd like a V8, but thought for now it'd be fun for a while playing with what I've got. It gets the truck down the street very well, clutch works well, so why mess with it? I've said I'd be looking for a V8/tranny for later, but I kind of like the simplicity of this motor. I can stand in the engine compartment with both my feet on the floor and work on it~ neato! However is a pain getting in and out! lol I just need the motor to get me and the truck down the street in good order, don't need a hotrod motor. So, I'm going to conjour up a motor support and get on with more important things on this project. dne' |

With that bellhousing and clutch setup you can swap right over to a V8 if and when you ever want to by just pulling the engine and leaving the bellhousing in the truck, swapping the clutch and flywheel to the V8 and putting it back together. But a good running 230/250 should pull close to 20 mpg and still cruise at road speeds easily. I put a lot of miles on one in my 48 over 15 years.

THanks Mr48chev! I found this neat little article about the I6, short but interesting! Again, I think I'll play with the 230 that's in my truck~ I've grown fond of it for some reason. I think I'll just have to fork out the money for a new(rebuilt)carb. I have gone into my carb over and over again trying to find why the truck is running so rich(no black smoke), but just smells strong. I did find out, I didn't tighten the intake/exhaust manifold bolts. I took some carb cleaner and sprayed along the intake, and the motor sped up towards the 5th cylinder. I tightned all the bolts and made a great difference and idles much better. I did have the head off not long ago, guess just needed to retighten the bolts. It's nice when something goes right!

I found some photos of a V8 with simple mounts that you could probably borrow on the design from .
With a plate bolted to the three mount bolts on the block and a piece of tubing (about 1=1/2) running out level and sitting on some biscuit mounts you would have a simple setup. |

Using the 3 bolt holes in the side of the block is how the newer vehicles and some older cars mounted the engines. On ALL task force trucks the engine mounts were on the front cross member, and used those pads or bosses you can see that are not drilled and tapped on the newer blocks, See the pads in front of the fuel pump. That is where the front engine mounts go for a task force truck. If I was going to use the side mount points on the block I would make a cradle type mount that goes to them and then forward to the cross member.

i took a piece of 2x4 tubing and mabe my own for the 250 i put in my IH, and frame of the chevy isnt to much of a difference. the cradles are or a car(nova/camaro) and the mounts themselves are mid 60's chevelle

I have something similar to what Pugs showed above but mine doesn't look good enough to show photos of. It was a quick and nasty do to get the truck running and driving to go to a car show 22 years ago and it's still in there although I had intended to take it apart and put a 396 in it the following winter. The 396 is still out in the garage in pieces. Someday It may end up in an El Camino if I ever find a 66.

Thank you PUgs! the photos really help! So I need those metal pieces that attache directly to the motor, then I can come off of that piece with the mount, then the 4x6 piece of metal tubing fabbed up to fit! that doesn't sound so bad. Just finding the piece that bolts directly to the block may be of concern to locate. Do I just go to my local salvage yards to find this piece? Actually I thought i was going to be running a mount from the block to the front crossmember, but I like Pugs way.

just take a piece of 2x4 or 2x6 about 8" long. i cut from one top corner to the bottom on the oppisite side so you will have 2 triangle shapped pieces, one for each side. then i took a piece of round tubing cut to the size of the mount. oh my mistake the cradles pieces are from an early chevy truck NOT the cars.

Pugs, you know, this mount project would be much easier if I could find the pieces/brackets that mount directly to the motor! argh! Why are those pieces not reproduced or why can't I find them on ebay?

In the bottom photo, the cross memeber has that big hole. That is what to go for. Look for mount points on the engine block close to them. It would look nicer, and most of the parts are available, may need to fab the brackets that bolt to the block.
Show some photos of the lower front of the engine. |

are there any yards around you can go and look. if so look out for 62-72 with a 6 banger in it.
