Re: instrument cluster with big RPM gauge?

I'd give ya $50 for it shipped...

In all honesty, yes they are rare. Not impossible to find, but rare. They're worth what people will pay for them on here. Have to pay the site the membership fee so you can sell it in the marketplace and see how much you can make off it.

Re: instrument cluster with big RPM gauge?

I sold a mint one for $80 shipped, then sold another mint one for almost $200. Depends on what day of the week it is...

Re: instrument cluster with big RPM gauge?

Just wondering if the factory tach had a switch on them to use for six cylinder motors. Since you have one in hand could you look?

Re: instrument cluster with big RPM gauge?

They are made for 6 cylinders or for 8 cylinders, there is no switch on them.

Re: instrument cluster with big RPM gauge?

There are a number of different models;pickup, medium duty, ammeter or volt meter, mech oil or electronic.

The most popular one is the pickup unit from 80-81 as it will look correct in the 80-87 trucks
1981 was the last year the factory offered a tach in a pickup

That is not correct. I ordered my '87 with the tach.

Re: instrument cluster with big RPM gauge?

May have been USA only option;I remember when we swapped out our 81 trucks we were unable to to order the 82s with tachs except for the medium duty models(c60).We had square body crewcabs until 91 but were never able to get a factory tach after 81;we did switch the tachs from the older trucks on a couple of them.

Keith ....does your SPID show U16 as the tach option?

Re: instrument cluster with big RPM gauge?

Well.... actually, no

In the interest of brevity I wasn't entirely forthcoming in my original answer.

Here's the rest of the story:

Remember when I had commented before about the trans RPO MY6 being placed on stoporder for 1987? (You can read about that in my build thread, linked below, page 1 post 4).

The act of writing the engineering release documenation to put that combination on stop order and then reintroducing it back into production was fraught with bookkeeping type errors. Engineering messed up and blocked some of the combinations that were previously available.

Before the stop order, the tach package was available on all (V6) engine options. As fate would have it, when the specifications group re-released the combination, they included all the other tachometer RPO U16 permutations, such as LB4 & M62/M64, and the auto trans combinations, but they forgot to include MY6. As a result, the parts were available, in the plant, could be installed and function properly and could be ordered with any of those other transmissions, just not the one I wanted.

After horsing around a bit, in the end what I did was order my truck with the trans RPO MY6 and the gage package Z53 to get it built - and then (...ahem...) "procured" a tach cluster from the plant for retrofit at a later date. I was reminded of all this when I restored my truck two years ago and the various wiring modifications I had to do were still intact and functioning.

So - I hope it's ok that I didn't go into all this detail in my original response, but the final answer is the same: the tach option was available and could be ordered in a 1987 pickup.
