Re: Quagmire extreme offroad truck... found it on hemmings.

Crazy that that thing placed 1st in the acceleration test in the 1998 Top Truck Challenge (got the DVD), even with those big *** tires.. It has a 572ci with 675 hp and 300hp NO2....

Have always loved this truck..the owner (previous?) seems like a nice guy also.

Box sides seem a little funky. Or is that just me?

Trucks like this make me want a 4x4 even more, thats one sweet rig.

Re: Quagmire extreme offroad truck... found it on hemmings.

The bed sides are flared to clear the massive tires. Does look a bit odd in the pictures. Don't know why he didn't use dually fenders, but cool just the same.

Look at the other square body in the shop with Quagmire..

Ahh I see, makes more sence and less odd now that I can see them better. Still one heck of a truck.

Re: Quagmire extreme offroad truck... found it on hemmings.

Man I love that truck. I used to have a video of the Top Truck Challenge that he participated in. I could watch it over and over. The straightline run he blew everybody away and after they were talking about how fast it was and the guy says, " I was only in second gear. I still had another gear." There was a challenge where the trucks had to try to pull a loaded dumptruck up a steep hill on dirt. A big block Ford made it all the way to the top iirc, but the Quagmire truck blew up the hill so fast the cameraman had to leap out of the way.
At the time I had just built a white 79 with that same grille, and I so wanted to add the red paintjob as a Quagmire tribute.

Re: Quagmire extreme offroad truck... found it on hemmings.

I can't imagine the math involved with gearing the front and rear for such different sized tires so the 4wd works without the motor eating the axles. Makes my brain hurt.

Re: Quagmire extreme offroad truck... found it on hemmings.

Really the formula used to calculate the correct axle ratio when you increase your tire size can be applied to both the front and rear.

new tire diameter x gear ratio
Old tire diameter

example:
35x3.08= 3.71 (as calculated) or 3.73 (available ratio)
29

52x3.08= 5.52 (as calculated) or 5.86 (available ratio)
29

For off road use the ratios only have to be close. The off road terrain will allow for some slipping. For on road use it would need a part time trans case allowing 2wd use. However I don't see this truck getting much street time.

Re: Quagmire extreme offroad truck... found it on hemmings.

see, now you made me brain hurt. iirc the truck was street legal.
at first glance it is pretty bizzare looking, maybe not the type of truck I'd like, doesn't look theres any flex or travel out back at all, BUT you have to see the truck in action to really appreciate it. In fact I'm going to see if I cant find a video clip to attach.

Re: Quagmire extreme offroad truck... found it on hemmings.

well, youtube searches turned up millions of Family Guy clips. But, this Quagmire predates Glen Quagmire (Giggity giggity goo) by a couple years. All I could find was a writeup in Four Wheeler. It was the 98 Top Truck Challenge if anyone knows where to find a video clip. Here's a short writeup:
Quagmire

Cutting-edge fullsize trucks are rare. And Mike Neibuhr's Quagmire is probably the most famous of these. Mike's goal was to build a truck that looked good enough for trophies but could handle the deepest mud Wisconsin could offer. He started with a '75 K-30 Chevy and developed front and rear airbag suspension that could handle serious abuse. The front Dana 60 has 35 splines knuckle to knuckle and houses 4.56:1 gears and a Detroit to turn 40-inch Paddle Hawgs.

Yet the real trick stuff resides behind the TH-400 and NP-205. Mike had blown up four Dana 60 ring-and-pinions trying to turn those 48-inch Firestones, so in went a narrowed 5-ton Rockwell rearend housing 5.86:1 gears and a Detroit. And as if this weren't unique enough, Mike attached the super trick cantilevered bellcrank in-cab adjustable airbag suspension to this Rockwell, making for one of the sturdiest and soft-riding rear suspensions we've come across. Yes, gearing, locked axles, and a stout driveline will help at Top Truck, but for the serious mud and sandblasting action this truck sees, nothing short of what a nitrous'd and fuel-injected big-block 454 would do. Mike bored the block 0.06-inch over and stuffed the holes with 10.5:1 TRW slugs. Brodix aluminum heads along with a Crower cam combine with the Force Engineering port fuel injection to produce somewhere around 500 horses from the now 468ci big-block.

As one may suspect, this good-looking setup scored high with the Engineering judges. In fact, Mike scored well in every event at TTC 1998, his consistency garnering him Third Place overall.

Nothing is new:

On a related note, take a look at the tug vehicle at about 1:00 mins:

The rest of the documentary not so interesting unless you're an aviation buff.
