So what is the biggest thing you have bought and then hidden from your spouse??

I know it sounds bad but I guess I mean maybe if for just a short while. As I get on in life, I'm enjoying the roll of a "marital peace officer". After I bought my dirt bike and my Camaro without running it past my wife first, we both decided to discuss certain purchases together. We are not exactly rolling in the dough.

Never fails.......just after this agreement I find a guy selling a complete running 454 with every pulley/bracket/pump you can think of. the guy wanted $300 on craigslist and I knew I had to act fast. I knew it would be impossible to show the logic to my wife on purchasing a motor for which I have no vehicle, only to have it take up space in a garage that already has no space. Anyway..........

Can you find the motor in this pic? HINT: It's the BBC that looks like a BBC with a sheet over it! lol

I thougth it would be fun to try and find the biggest purchase you have made but didn't tell your spouse for fear of the consequences. This is not directed at the lucky folks with deep pockets that buy what they want and when they want it......make sense?

UPDATED: This was really meant to be in fun but I can see how it might be easy to simply comment on what I did. The post is not about what you thing about what I did but rather if you have done something similar. The OP isn't looking for hatemail.....just wondering what purchases got you in the doghouse!

Re: So what is the biggest thing you have bought and then hidden from your spouse??

Well, I have never bought anything and then tried to hide it. However, I have told her about things to which she disagreed, but I bought it anyway, so, needless to say, that did create some marital distress, lol. But, she is a super girl and has always gotten over, sometimes it takes longer than others, and she still reminds me of it from time-to-time, but it all works out, lol. Like someone on here posted what their wife said: "this crap better make a truck", lol,

Re: So what is the biggest thing you have bought and then hidden from your spouse??

I bought a house 3 months ago and move into it in like 20 days, my wife just found out this morning, because I had to explain why I am going to the lawyers office (not to get a divorce, lol)

I bought a Les Paul Traditional without telling her, and an 1986 Firebird, both got me the couch for a night or two hehehe.

Re: So what is the biggest thing you have bought and then hidden from your spouse??

I could not see doing that. I know everyone has their own ways, but it just seems like being very dishonest. I think Wayne has the right idea. If your going to make your own purchases, have separate money to do so.

I have never told J what to do or what not to do when buying stuff. He knows what I think of it, but in the end if he wants it, it is his decision. Much like if I want to go buy the kids a pool or trampoline etc.. I will tell him, he can give an opinion, and in the end if I want it well I get it..

That may sound wrong.. but what I mean is, we do not have the issue of one telling the other no you cant do that, you have to much crap, ewe thats rusty etc... but we do respect each other enough to let each other in on things...

As for your pic nope I would not notice it.. then again, I have walked past parts cars in the driveway and not even realized they were there..

Naw.....dishonest is lying about it or something to that effect. I'm just waiting for the right time to "tell" her.

Re: So what is the biggest thing you have bought and then hidden from your spouse??

Generally speaking we discuss things and make a decision one way or the other together. I've found the key to this is "selling" her on the idea, sometimes long in advance.

So when it came to get a car (this was a few years ago) she said "lets get a corvette". Who am I to argue with that????

On other things we give ourselves allowances. So she buys what she wants with her allowance, and I buy what I want. That's why I have a plasma cutter

On my 68 we set up a budget that got money each month.

I couldn't agree more. This is why I was able to pull off the 67 mustang fastback we still have. Problem with craigslist is that it doesn't usually give you advanced notice on the deals you know will be gone in an hour!

I guess that would be only if you had a bad egg at some point in your life. I went 15 years between marriages and prefer the hitched life now!

thats why you have to talk about it before hand, so when the deal pops up you can jump on it with no worries

Re: So what is the biggest thing you have bought and then hidden from your spouse??

My Bette and Liz are apparently alot alike. I can leave a new tool, or part on the bench and odds are she won't notice, or assumes I've had it all along. If I have had the item for more than an hour, and she happens to ask about it, I just tell her I've had that for a while. Now, this isn't out-right deception......I've seen her in a new-to-me outfit and have asked her how long have you had that dress, sweater, pair of shoes, etc and I get the "Oh, it's been in the closet for a long time." The end result is, we decide together on big items, and if one or the other disagrees, at least we don't stay angry too long.......in fact, I think she likes the truck now
Speaking of wives, and this is a little off subject, but She'll come out to the shop and I'm wandering around apparently aimlessly and she'll ask what am I looking for. Well, I'll describe the thermal-frading-gasket-framus-connector, and not even knowing what she's looking for will find it! What's up with that?

it's hard to "hide" any purchases from my wife, since we have a joint account, that she checks pretty frequently. I have to tell her not to look at the bank account around her birthday and christmas!

Re: So what is the biggest thing you have bought and then hidden from your spouse??

Pro, I don't think you spent 300 dollars. I think you made 700 dollars.
The 454 is worth about a grand right?

Yesterday your assets were what they are plus 300 dollars. Today your assets are what they are minus 300 dollars plus a 454 with a liquid value of 1000 dollars. That's a 700 dollar increase in family assets. It's just in a different place on your spread sheet.

When you tell your wife, Don't say you spent 300 dollars, Tell her that you made 700 dollars and then tell her how.

LOL....I know that and that's why I bought it. Here is the other angle though. Just like a stock or a house, the money is only made (or lost)bwhen you SELL and I'm not selling it!!!

Yes, of course your right, but I would still start the conversation with the 700 dollar gain.

Re: So what is the biggest thing you have bought and then hidden from your spouse??

I hid my 4x4 at moms house for nearly 6 months. Wife knew i was looking for one, just did nt tell her when I found it And I would have gotten away with it if it had not been for my meddling sister-in-law (think scoobie doo) Actually my wife went out to eat with my mom and was backing up in her drive to leave and my sis in law said oh be careful dont back over your husbands truck... needless to say I received a call in short order to which i explained that the statute of limitations had run out (6 months on trucks ) and it was paid for and she never realized it. Mind you we had seperate accounts so it was easier to let her digest.

Re: So what is the biggest thing you have bought and then hidden from your spouse??

Hmm, hid my ZX6R Ninja at my work for about 3 months, before driving it home. Then parked it on the driveway and forgot all about it. She came home, wasn't too impressed. She didn't care what I bought, it was a matter of her hating motorcycles and how dangerous they are. Never did get over me riding lol

Now the current gf questions things I buy, but I get them cheap enough they'll be a profit in the future when I do sell them, which she understands. Problem is I'm not selling them hahaha so I'm getting a little slack for that of course
