So i'm driving my wifes 2000 Ford F250 Diesel

to work at 5am and this punk kid won't let me in the left lane. He keeps speeding his Honda up and then slowing down to block me for no reason that I can think of. My street on the left is coming up, it's still dark out so I figure what the heck and I stomp the 4 by 4's pedal to the floor and the turbo kicks in. Sawed his doors completely off and I have this wide smile on my face as I return my eyes to the road from the rearview mirror only to lock eyes with a cop going the other way. I check my speedo - 79 in a 45. He slams on the brakes and begins a powerslide turn to get behind me, I am watching this now in the rearview and right when his car was perpendicular to the road in its slide I turn left, stop fast and shut it down dark. (I figure I can just tell him I was waiting for him since I was obviously breaking the law.) Now this road has no houses or businesses on it but still, 79, I couldn't believe it! He flies by at about 90 and doesn't even see me. My heart is thumping so I wait for a couple of minutes and then drive the rest of the way to work. Unbelievable. I am 40 for crying out loud. So I tell my wife and she says, you should have just taken the lane, its a big truck, he would have moved.

The whole episode taught me a couple of lessons.

1. Never underestimate the 16 year old in you coming out at the strangest times.

2. Turbo-Diesels are no joke. I would love one in a 67-72. Chevy even has the Allison transmission now which is what the Ford's main problem in their trucks have been, the tranny's

Anyway, thought I would share.

Re: So i'm driving my wifes 2000 Ford F250 Diesel

I was on a 4 lane State Highway about 3 months ago in my '72 GMC. My truck has 400+ HP and will hold it's own with most street cars. Suprise a lot of Mustang and rice rocket owners.

Anyways... The Highway I was on has a few stop lights on it as well. So I roll up to a stoplight when it's red and there is a big fairly new lifted Dodge 3/4 ton Turbo Diesel in the left lane waiting at the light. Light goes green... we both roll out of the light. I hear the big diesel start to spool up, and I leave my truck in second gear... we both start edging back and forth, going faster and faster. I finally romped on it, and the MOPAR was a split second behind me as I saw the huge ploom of black smoke exit his tailpipe.

As we rolled through 100mph... that big lifted monster was right on my left rear quarter... never moved. I was impressed... big time.

When we stopped at the next light we were both laughing... I gave him a thumbs up, and he did the same. I made a right at the Interstate onramp, and never saw that truck again. So... yep... those turbo diesels are no joke.

Have to respect and love those TD's. My dad just put a chip in his Dodge TD with 6spd manual. Usually keep the chip in tow mode, but if you put in it #5 which is HP mode, the truck will spin tires all day long. And it's a 3/4T with a bed fully loaded with S/S tool box and gas tank. I think the truck weighs in a 9000 fully loaded on the scales and it pulls like no tomorrow, even weighted down.

Yeah, it really is like having the best of both worlds. My wife better be careful, someday she might come outside and find her engine in my truck! =)

RaginAsian - I have a lot of respect for the kids and the know how that they put into their 4 cylinders. (Not the posers who add a wing and exhaust) but the real engine builders. They get some serious horsepower that spools up fast. The guy messing with me was a poser type but the things some of these kids today are doing to their imports are the same things we were doing to our American muscle cars back in the day and then some. Real complex stuff. I like the simplicity of the old American V8 but I do recognize the skills they have. (and respect after a couple runs against them) =)

I agree. But they make quieter mufflers.

if any of you diesel guys see me "cut you off" it is not an act of aggression. I simply cannot stand the exhaust fumes (major headache later)

I do pick my battle carefully though. my 89 Civic is more suited for the mopeds and power wheelchairs.

I have full respect for the modern TDs. I put a full on Banks kit in a customer's Max-Al a few years ago. total power slide from a stand still while turning hehehehehe

stuff like this is why we drive TRUCKS! guy won't let you change lanes? no problem! after a respectable amount of time with your signal on, just dive that truck to the left once & they usually get the message. my fav though is when they come around the corner on my side of the road. i put that left front tire on the yellow lines & it's amazing how fast that little car will bounce back to his shoulder!

My daily driver is a 99 Dodge CTD 4x4 dually, that has some goodies on it. It seems everybody wants to race me, or mess with me. If I drive my primered 91 F-250, with chopped fenders, 36's, and lots of dents, I get alot more respect.

my other truck is a 2000 Ford F250 Superduty crew cab.. ( unfortunely not a diesel ) I got it for farm work and towing, when I was helping out at my Dad's farm...

My wife likes it and has been using it as her Daily Driver... (13 mpg) she says noone cuts her off, and they always make room in the lane.. LOL....

I have to ask permission to "borrow" her truck...

I have a 2001 Ford F-350 Powerstroke we use to pull our race trailers...

We put a full Banks Power kit with the Module, Intake, Exhaust etc.. and it has a K&N cold air kit and it pulls a big 48' car hauler pretty well. But.... by itself it has some serious "get up and go"

My detroit diesel is set at 500 h.p. and pulls 80,000 lbs. Five days a week.
On a good day I get 6 mpg. ;-)

My DD is a 03 F250 PSD. I try to give other drivers the benefit of the doubt, but at the end of the day, my bumper is bigger than theirs (and made of STEEL!!). Unless of course your GVW is 80,000, in which case your bumper is bigger than mine, and I will happily move out of your way!!

Re: So i'm driving my wifes 2000 Ford F250 Diesel

My father bought himself a 05 dmax last fall an that is the sweetest truck I've ever driven, I have several stories of getting respect even when hauling a trailer. One time in the winter I was doing snow removal for my father an I was in his truck hauling a enclosed trailer loaded down for snow removal an when I was heading up to our shop there was a newer Ford half ton picking on me because it was icy and I couldnt take off. He kept slowing up an cutting out in front of me several times in a short distance just to piss me off but I figured "o well somebody with a dmax will humble him soon" and got to the shop an my father was pissed because of what he was doing. Well fast forward a few weeks the roads were dry and i was hauling the exact same load an here I see the same Ford going to fly past me to cut me off so me being me I waited until he got to my tail gate then gave her some gas an then we were running flush an I looked over and he realised i recognised him an knowing he couldn't win sense the roads were dry he slowed down an got behind me and I drove very very slow an he never even tried to do it again. Never needed to race him but guarantee he won't be stroking his ego like that again .

My bro in law has a 00 Ford diesel with a nice sounding exaughst and a six inch lift, I'm not a Ford truck but thats a nice truck.

I have an 02 F350 I have done a few things to and I get people like that all the time... so I've adapted a 3 blink rule, I let my blinker go 3 blinks, then I change lanes. They move. Here's a couple pics.

And here's my "new" chevy that I use the same rule in...

Re: So i'm driving my wifes 2000 Ford F250 Diesel

My father in law had an F350 dually up until a couple months ago. Had a similar experience one night, except we were just having fun. Ended up hitting the governor at 100 in a 35. Poor Honda didn't know what the hell happened. That truck got totaled out after getting t-boned by a drunk driver one night though, sent thier fifth wheel straight into the cab. He has a pretty sweet '08 F250 now, and one hell of a headache rack. Can't deny that truck is kinnnda why I'm looking for a crew cab turbo myself now.

I have been thinking if the wife and I keep this Durango for a few more years, and if the engine ever dies, I plan to replace it with a Cummins inline 6 turbo diesel, probably the 5.9L... but thats still down the road a ways.
