My own IRONHIDE...I have too much free time

Hello, i am pretty new here. In fact this is my first post, but i have been a lurker for a while. This is going to be a bit long, sorry, but I feel I fell I need to explain myself. I am a real hillbilly, and have limited money, but no limit on imagination or willingness to mess things up. Soooo...I got a 78 GMC 6000 for $1000. It was a retired county dump truck with the bed removed but only 71000 miles on it. It has a 350 with a 4 speed, sorry not sure which what tranny, and runs great down the road. I needed a wood hauler, and thought this would be perfect. So it sat in the driveway waiting for a Flatbed to be made. Then my daily driver (an 88 gmc extra cab 1/2 ton) had a pile of problems all at once, and was to be sent to the scrap yard. I went on the web site "BIG ASS TRUCKS" a while earlier, and thought i might as well make an extra cab and then use that bed with some flares over the duallies. My son said something about it looking like Ironhide, so the name stuck. I know this all seems a little silly, but i wanted to drive this thing and with three kids, i need the room. The cabs line up alright. The bed fits almost perfectly as well. Alright that is enough rambling. I am going to get some pictures on here really soon, if anyone is interested in seeing any of this monster. Any comments would be cool, i have no pride left.

paint that rear cab white and extend your stepside and it should look pretty good for sure. That box will never look right though so the flat bed will be the best bet. can wait to see some pics once you get that done.

Re: My own IRONHIDE...I have too much free time

I know about the bed. Although that bed is just cocked off to one side and actually fits great with only slightly less than 5 inches of tire hanging out. I have a friend with a dually bed that I think I can get . The flatbed is the way I am going to go in the long run as soon as I can get the materials for one I have in mind to build. I can tell ya'll one thing though, you find out who your real friends are when you have to lift a cab and bed up on a truck frame!!!

Re: My own IRONHIDE...I have too much free time

Got an update. fitted the bed on, and got the cab all welded. i am not doing close ups of my welding cause it is not great. I can say that stock in grinder wheels and sanding disks will definitely rise by the time i am done with this and all the body work. I have to fab some mounts and then it will be ready to be secured on. Then I just have all the fun of body work. Name: 102_4545.jpg

Freaky but kinda cool in a weird sorta way. You'll be the proud owner of a truly one-of-a-kind truck. I salute you, sir.

Re: My own IRONHIDE...I have too much free time

Thanks for the comments fellas. I know I am a hillbilly, and this is probably pretty odd to most people, but I needed the cab space and had zero dollars. So far I have spent $1030 total on this build, including the purchase of both trucks. I have done all the work on my own, with my 7 year old son and 3 year old daughter standing around to offer "advise". Gotta love the kids insight. That and when I lifted the bed up there, I could see that they thought I was doing something Impossible. Its neat to have someone look up to you like that.

Looks good only thing i would "change" is shave the lower body line on the EXT cab and box so it matches but like i said Looks GOOD!

Re: My own IRONHIDE...I have too much free time

You should buy some rough 73-87 doors and use the skin to make your extra cab section match the older body style doors

In a world of cookie-cutter cars why not some originality? Love it!
