'86 C10 Rats Nest under hood ???
i just bought this '86 C10, and its got that wonderful little "power"house 5.0 in it. along with it, came literally a rats nest on top of the intake, inside all of those wonderful little vaccuum lines, and AIR lines. how much of this stuff can i take off and still have functional cruise control and air conditioning? i'd like to see that there is actually an engine in there, and not just a big bundle of wires.

I have an 86 with a 305 under the hood myself. I know what your talking about when you say rats nest. The old vacuum lines get brittle and break, leaving you to wonder why your engine is all of a sudden running like crap. I currently have parts on order from Summit to take care of all that.

I'm in the process of getting rid of some stuff under the hood. EGR has been blocked off and the air pump is gone. I haven't even begun to decifer the vacuum line "map" to see what can get plugged, tossed, or rerouted. It would be nice to see a how-to on this. Lemme go google it.

2.73s and 3.08s are most common behind a 700R4. i might be able to get ahold of the stock 3.08 from my '82 C10 for my '86. that ought to be a little improvement for me.

My truck originally came with a turbo 350, but the previous owner droped a 400 in it with a shift kit in anticipation of putting a 350 under the hood.
Im always leery of that tranny, I dont know why. Ive had it checked out at a shop and they say its fine. Im thinking of 3.73 rear end, but dont want to give up any gas mileage.

I also have an 86 chevy that had the same nest. The AIR pump was locked up. I removed all the AIR hoses and unnecessary vacuum lines. I put on an aluminum intake and new carb. It now has headers and duals and runs a lot better.

We have no inspection here so I don't have to worry about what I remove. One of these days I expect we will have to start though.

When you say you have no inspection, do you mean you don't have to have any type of inspection, ie.... lights, horn, blinkers, inspection sticker. Or do you mean you do not have to have it smog tested?
Where I live, I have to have the lights, horn, and all of that checked, but not emissions (smog) tests. I am not real sure if they will look under the hood of a vehicle this old.

In Oklahoma they dont inspect anything. They used to inspect for safety stuff only but people got pissed off about it, and voted it out. So I can do anything I like to engine and emissions

I have an '86 with a 305 also. What a mess under the hood.
We currently just have a safety inspection here in San Antonio, but they will probably start emission testing here soon. They are already doing it in Houston and Dallas. A lot of the emissions stuff has been removed from my truck, so this worries me. I'm afraid I will have to put it all back on. I did not remove it, so I really don't know what I am missing. If amnyone wants to get rid of their '86 AIR pump, brackets, and the exhaust manifold tubing, I'll pay postage! Slonaker |
