Rebuilding the 12bolt rear in my 65

Ok so my 65 has a bad seal on the driver side which has made a huge mess inside the brake drum. Well I have pulled axle shafts out a truck before but never removed the ring gear or anything like that but I am thinking of rolling the axle out of the truck and rebuilding it completely from end to end new brakes and drums and all new bearings and seals then painting the axle and reinstalling it with new u bolts and the whole setup so being as I have never completely done this I am seeking advise maybe seeing if there is anything specifically I need to do or pay attention to

If you have not rebuilt a center section of a rear, I would suggest a pro do it. There is more than just replacing parts. Not knockin your abilities, but its not as easy as it seams.

The hardest part is setting pinion depth. It takes some specialized tools.

Next hardest is the crush sleeve for setting the pinion bearings.

After that its setting the gear backlash.

I did mine with all new gears, bearings, and posi unit. It took me quite awhile, but I'm somewhat of a perfectionist when it comes to that stuff.

Krazy Tex....

If you have some experience with this rear diff and aren't afraid of a little bit more of a challenge....you can think about the following;
It isn't out of line to expect 500K miles or even more out of a well set up ring & pinion.
If you aren't hearing or experiencing any gear related symptoms.....and you are thinkin' you want to o-haul this thing, then have at it......and reuse the gear-set that you have.
You'll need a brg splitter, a large press, an inch pound torque wrench and an impact wrench.
Take care to retain the carrier shim-packs in order by side and the pinion shims by position. You'll need to replace the crush sleeve, so follow the instructions carefully and you shouldn't have any problems.
You should be able to replace every brg. and seal in the whole diff. and reassemble it to the same tolerances without any problems.
The gears will mesh as they did before as long as you keep track of your shims.
Then you can paint to your hearts content.....
