Any switched power source, In other words a wire that has power with the key in run position but no power with the key off.

Very close.
The exciter wire normally goes to the GEN or ALT lamp on the dash. The idiot lamp bulb drops the voltage to @8vdc at the alternator plug. When the alternator goes bad and stops regulating the battery voltage to 13.4 volts, the exciter terminal will be much less than the battery voltage. The difference in voltage makes the lamp illuminate.

The idiot light bulb is @ 470 Ohms in resistance. The gauge equipped trucks have a resistance wire tied to the fuse panel.

If you are tying the field exciter straight to an ignition switched 12v source you need to insert @ 470-500 ohms of resistance inline to make up for the missing bulb. I would use a 1/2 watt 500 ohm resistor and put it where it won't burn the truck down if it gets hot.
