I went for a MPG cruise yesterday

And I got some good news! Over 16!

I drove 113 miles, about half and half freeway and windy mountain canyon, with a couple miles of dirt road thrown in. On 6.6 gallons. I know that figures out to 17.12, but my odie is a little slow, about a tenth in 2 miles, so I figured about about 107 miles. That's 16.21. (a tenth in 2 miles-1/2 of total=56. 56 x .1 = 5.6. 113-5.6=107.4. round down to 107 miles divided by 6.6=16.21

'68 long bed, 250 4 speed. And I was doing 65-70 on the freeway and 50 or so in the canyons.

I think that is pretty good for this old truck!

C/10 or C/20?
What was your freeway speed?
Stock gear? Standard gear?
Sounds great.

It's a C/10. 65-70 on the freeway-it's mostly flat and 50's in the canyons-very steep and windy. I don't know what 4 speed it is, probably whatever came stock, but I know it has 3.73's in the rear end.

I was hoping for more than 10, but I never expected 16. I always like to check milage, so I'll be keeping an eye on it.

Yeah, yeah. All you guys making me jealous with your 6 bangers. And here I have to put up with a 350CID/700R4. One of these days I gotta toss my setup out in favor of a 250 or 292.

Re: I went for a MPG cruise yesterday

i got 14... or maybe it was 16 in my big block burb for about 1/3 of the trip cross country when I bought it.
It had a bunch of wiped cam lobes and bent intake pushrods, so the valves weren't opening as much as they should have (still hit on all 8) and the throttle cable was messed up and I could only get 1/2 throttle... I'm sure those two conditions helped a LOT!

same mpg double the hp. Just if you want to compare apples to apples not that max hp matters if you're just using 1/3 of it cruising around.

Re: I went for a MPG cruise yesterday

That's great. I have a 250cid with a 3-speed and only get about 12. Mine is screaming at 65, I rarely take it over 60 on the highway. Your mileage is pretty good!

Re: I went for a MPG cruise yesterday

Sounds impressive!

Just make sure you average out your mileage...with old fuel gauges and an off-speedo the numbers are far from reliable. Over a few fill-ups you'll have a better idea of true mileage.

I had a VW new beetle TDI and averaged around 35mpg. I got 70mpg one time measuring mileage this way (one tank) on a 100 mile trip on interstate....

Re: I went for a MPG cruise yesterday

Pretty good for a 6-banger. My cammed 350/TH350 with 3.73's averaged 14mpg. I just switched to 3.07 gears, so I'm hoping for 16ish.

Well OK...if you twist my arm

Just a plain jane green truck:

With a plain jane 250:

All I have done is add power brakes and HEI. Oh, and a better valve cover than what was on it. That I didn't get sealed very well.
