Camaro Tach conversion Fail
For about 2 years now, I have been wanting to put a Camaro Tach in my stock cluster. Well I worked on it last week and there is no movement in the tach, even though it looks good and close to the stock look, if it doesnt work, it was a waste of time and $.
Is there a way to check a 1980 Camaro tach, or any one for that matter, to see if it is working? I have checked the wiring, it is correct, I have a 12V power wire, a ground (to the case of the gauge cluster, and a wire direct to the ground of the vehicle), and a wire that goes to the tach output of my HEI Distributor. I know something is not functioning properly, it is either the tach or the output from the Distributor. How can I check these items? Could it bae something else?

Re: Camaro Tach conversion Fail
I do have a power source that is on while the ignition is on. Does it have to be powered all the time?

Re: Camaro Tach conversion Fail
was it a v8 tach? You may want to try connecting a known good tach and see if it works. If you have a good enough DVOM that can measure pulse width, but the known good tach is always a sure-fire route. Are you using the single wire off the HEI? Got any pics? Pics may help in troubleshooting. Just a warning, tachs and speedos that use a pulse width DO NOT LIKE TO BE JUMPED FOR TESTING!

Just curious, when you applied 12V positive to the correct location on the tach, did the needle go to zero?
