Post From Mine to Hers Build

Well I guess I need to go ahead and start the build thread on this truck. Its a 68' C10 swb. 70 front suspension already installed. This is going to be a full frame off resto on this one. Kinda late on starting the thread for the build due to the fact that alot of stuff has been done, but there is still plenty of work to be done. So far I have sanded and primed and painted the entire frame. Some small repairs but nothing major. Paint entire frame and suspension with summit chassis paint. All new bushings, ball joints, and tie rod ends. 3" drop springs in the front and 5" drop springs in the rear.
Currently I'm trying to knip the bodywork in the butt. Going to have the roof welded up and finished this week(had to cut the old off and replace with a nice hand me down.) Other then that I will start it off with this and just continue on as I go. Kinda got a kick in the butt from my buddy to get this started, BACKYARD88. So thanks for that Mike! Anywho I will post some photos up here soon!

Re: From Mine to Hers Build

Got the engine torn down...... ouch!
looks like I'm in need for some pistons. So here's my question. Should I got back stock or should I spunk it up a little. Planningon putting a cam in it and some head work. So not to sure. Any ideas????????

Re: From Mine to Hers Build

Well so a small update. Got the bad piston out. Checked out the block, looks like it's going to need some work done. Has some pretty good gouges. (enough to catch your nail) So now I need to find out if it has to be bored to get fixed and if so what kind of pistons i have to buy... Ughhh what a PITA. But gotta do it. Still in process with the roof getting welded up. Will have some pics up as soon as its completed.

Re: From Mine to Hers Build

I'm in the TMC (med center). You prob already are but be sure you check those heads over closely, I cracked one when my old 427 did that to the piston. Good luck and the 6.0 will be kick ass in this truck!

Yea the heads will be going to the machine shop. Hopefully they are okay. Looks like just some minor cosmetic stuff but that can turn around in a second.

Re: From Mine to Hers Build

Well not a whole lot going on this week. Got a 5.3 motor that I'm going to take the heads off of for my 6.0.... The heads on the 6.0 have some cracks in them and if I go ahead and run the 5.3 heads it will be a little more compression and more flow. So that should work out pretty good. Just kinda at a slow pace right now.

The aluminum heads are easily weld repaired when cracked or damaged.

If you want to run a turbo you don't want to bump the compression any so I would try to get the 6.0 heads repaired rather than put the 5.3 heads onto it.

I would take all the accessories off the 5.3 that you need for your engine and sell off the 5.3 long block to fund the repair work on the 6.0 stuff.

Go with some forged pistons and ARP rod bolts & main bolts when you put the short block back together along with dropping in a turbo friendly and more aggressive cam.

Would these work?

http://houston.craigslist.org/pts/2462747681.html

I know the bore is bigger, but would the pistons work for that application.

No, nothing from the older small blocks will work on the Gen III / IV motors.

Re: From Mine to Hers Build

So I guess i have a bit of an update. Got all of my engine parts together. 6.0 block and lower end and 5.3 heads all of the the machine shop to be fresh'nd up. All new bearings, seals, and rings. Not sure on cam choice yet but thats in the making. As for the truck. Roof has been welded on and paint process has begun.....I'm sure a few weeks to come on that though....

Re: From Mine to Hers Build

Well here's another "small" update in this longggggggg build. Seems to be going slow for me! Got my hood finished up (and primed) just dont have a photo of that. Fender is finished except for the fact that i now have to shave the side markers on this thing... And lets not forget my kids new toy that I now have to add to the list of things to do!!! haha
