me and my truck specs

well guys ive never told about myself or my truck so here i go

im a 20 year old male from abilene texas live here still

i have a 1982 SWB 2wd chevy pick up same year i was born

im just havint to rebuild hte motor i spun 7th and 8th rod bearings it was a 400 sb bored 30 with a 10/10 crank

so now im going 60 over 20/20 crank valve job done to the heads
60 over flycut 400 pistons falt top

480 lift lunati cam holley 650 cfm carb with an edlebrock performer intake and a tru double roller timing chain


dynomax headers 4o series flowmaster mufflers with 2 1/2 pipe gonna be turned down under the bed

this is al the new speciafactions done to my vehicle after this is all done i will start the interior


and then a new paint job and such on the outside a blue outside and with blue/black interior

then later on im gonna get another SWB and customize it for a HotRod with a Big Block and some bucket seats and such but so far i just have the one pick up


thats all about me and my pick up i love it to death whouldnt trade it for the world its my baby

sorry i never gave this info before but since i thought well this is whats beein done to it i think will be awsome

sounds like a good plan. got any pics?

my uncle is rick from ricks custom shop in abilene. he can hook you up with some show quality paint, flames is one of his specialties, been in the biz for 30+ years. hes gonna do mine when ever i finish everything else. heres his personal truck

im gonna take a few pics of the engine as i build it im putting the motor to gether im 20 it will be my first motor i feel so proud of that my grand dather is gonna help me
the color i want the truck is Saverian Blue its a real pretty blue

.060" on a sb400? I thought that was a no no? You did have it sonic checked first right?

It is..a 400 is already gonna run hot, and punching it .060 over is gonna make it even worse! If I were you, I'd just run a 400 punched .030 over. (406's are cool!)

Naw I aint worried about the heat. Overboring the motor is only going to let the heat transfer to the coolant easier anyways. I just know the cylender walls are thin on 400's due to the increased bore [4.125"] and anything over .030" should be checked first.

u know its funny that every one says that a 400 gets hot my 406 dosnet go over 180* and thats when we are out 4 wheelin

mine either, bored .030 over--4x4 '79 Blazer 4"lift w/35"tires never overheated.
Don't have it anymore though.

Ok, overheated once, but the radiator line was cut by the battery...field fix and on my way.

If you have not already, I would take tom's advise and have the block sonically tested. A well equipped machine shop should be able to do this for a reasonable price, and you'll know if the block will last more than a few seconds as well.

a 400 punched .030 over is fine..but anymore than that...is risky IMHO.

Anything over .030 on a 400 block requires block filler. This is a strength issue more than a temp issue. Once you go over the .030 threshold and block filler is used, consider yourself as the proud owner of a "race only" block.

Try and go for a light hone for clean-up instead of an all out over-overbore.

i've built 10 or 15 small blocks, and i have NEVER been able to build one, and install it in the same day. if you just expect to have all the parts, and slap it together in a few hours, i've got news for you. ITS NOT GOING TO LAST! you need to make sure your ring end gaps, rod and main bearing clearances are within spec, and make sure EVERY fastener is torqued to spec. also, make sure everything is spotless, because one spec of dirt can ruin all of your progress. if you're still going to attempt it in one day, i wish you the best of luck. dont come crying when 3 weeks down the road its broken.

ive got my grandfather helping me hes 70 years old hes built alot of motors and ive got a good friend thats built a couple of motors so if not in one day at least a saturday and sunday

but i dont think 60 over wil lbe a problem in my 400 and i asked about a block filler an all and said it whould be ok with out it hes bored many 400s out to 60 the machine shop im usin has been here for long long long time bout 54 years

i've got a .04 over 400 block, bare right now. 400 overheating problems are WAY over exaggerated. most of the people that go around telling people "oh your never gonna keep that 400 cool, they all overheat" have never even had one. and then if you ask people who have had them like the 3 or 4 people in this thread, they all say no problems. with a good cooling system (4 core, high flow pump, ect.) you shouldn't have any problems keeping a 400 cool.

as for being .06 over, that is pretty far for a 400, but all that matters is that your machine shop stands behind their work, then if problems result from it take it back to them.

all i know is i cant wait to ge it all together and in the pick up adn running again its killing me knowin that ive got a billy bad ass motor and cant be put together money is tight right now and all

When i was younger my dad and i built a 400 bored.30 over and we never had heating problems. those are pretty stout engines.
