this is great just what i was thinking about.I have an extra gas tank out of my 69 gto and i had it in my mind to see if it would fit. This is what i want to do,How did you shorten the neck? Were did the roll pan came from and hinge for the plate?Did you make the strap holders? What sending unit are you using. What year is this truck?Like to see more of the truck too.

Re: gas tank for a 54 truck
straps are factory replacement for that tank,so the straps from your gto should be the same.I ordered everthing new from Spectra premium, tank mounting straps and sending unit, and its out of a 70 chevelle 20 gal not a 69 my mistake,69's are 18 gal. The door i had made up at my local sheet metal shop and the hinge is from your glove compartment door.but i had to rework the spring tension to keep the door up. I'm also installing a standard cabinet door magnet latch to make sure it stays up. Mine is a 54 gmc Canadian.http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/a...1&d=1308830969

Sorry i forgot, the neck i cut right at the rib and the neck just slips inside so it can be soldered up, but you have to be careful.

Re: gas tank for a 54 truck
nice pics!the rake looks good! you did the tank right clean looking. Will that sending unit work with your after market gauges? I had to (c) my frame for the rearend.did you have to do that?Am about to put the cab on.I replaced the fire wall with a *****en smooth firewall.New front floor boards, cab corners and driver side cowl panel.once i get the tank on then the bed will go on.i should have alot more room in the shop after that.once i figure out how to put pics here i will send some your way.were did you get the roll pan?

Re: gas tank for a 54 truck
I had a used tank out of a 69 gto.Set it in place but it doesnt fit. This truck is set up with a leaf spring rear end.I looked at your and you have a four bar set-up.I can see your fitting in nicely.I have been surfing the net trying to find something to fit it.Any suggestions?

Re: gas tank for a 54 truck
The gto tank from spectra looks to be the same as the 70 chevelle 39 1/4 x24 1/2 x 7 3/4 my tank fits between the frame rails at the front then the rails get wider from there. You could try a 68 chevy 2 (nova) they are 38 x19 3/8 x 7 3/8 . The other problem you will have with these type of tanks are getting the exhaust out the back, but i'm not doing that.

Re: gas tank for a 54 truck
You can go to spectra's web site and click on E-catalogue then you can look at any make and model of tank you can think of, they all have the dimensions and pictures. The 68 chevy 2 is still rear filler and the 67 looks to be the same, but with no filler neck and smaller size.I just went with chevy so I'd have more luck with the sending unit working with my gauges. The web site is www.spectrapremium.com good luck

Re: gas tank for a 54 truck
Whatever you do, DO NOT WELD A USED GAS TANK. Your friends will need a rake to get enough pieces to bury. Trust me I worked as a Fire Captain in Los Angeles. I dont care how many times you wash it out. Some guys fill them up with water and that might work, but I would spend the money for a new one or buy some stainless steel and make one to fit. I did this on my 54 and used an Autometer universal sender and their gas guage to match. If you want to guage the amount it wil hold, go to the fish store and measure some of the fish tanks. They are marked according to gallon size. The universal sender is adjustable so it will work with different heights. Be safe and best wishes on your project.

Re: gas tank for a 54 truck
handfull54-it will be new just trying to find one to fit between the leaf springs(33").and fill from the rear.It is looking like one out of a van and would have to relocate the filler neck. How is yours set up?
